Shubhra Basu

St. Mary’s school

The principle
Wilfrid Laurier
Dear selection committee,
Shubham has done his entire schooling from our school. I’ve personally
taught him for two years but I’ve known him for many. He’s always been
mentioned by the teachers whenever there’s a discussion about
excellency among students. He shows most interest in science subjects
but has shown potential in social sciences and English too.
Until last month, I remember him interacting with teachers consistently
about his patent in the motor mechanics department. He is known for
always acing his textbooks and exploring beyond the classroom. His
computer science was very impressive with his coding languages (python,
JAVA,C++). His research paper in potential energy in relativity intrigued
the entire science department. He’s always enthusiastic about new topics.
It is natural if you grasp topics at his speed. His nuanced perception and
performance always ceases to impress us (teachers) and his peers.
He is familiar with the walls of our school auditorium. He’s won NSO and
IMO ever since he started participating. Being in the math department, I
have heard his praises and accomplishments. Our principal really was
impressed when he was ranked in top 100 of the students in a
competition with a participation of hundreds of thousands- Aryabhatta
Ganit Challenge(2019-20).
He is interactive and inquisitive. During his trip to Denmark exchange
program (2018), he managed to give an outstanding presentation about
our country’s culture. We were told how impeccable of a host he was
when the foreign students visited India. He’s patient and understanding
when it comes to interacting with culturally different people and is
empathetic to people with disabilities.
During the last PTM interaction his mother revealed that he has been
volunteering in holy gurudwaaras and donation drives regularly. He’s
known to know the answer to every difficult question and doesn’t shy
away from putting forward his opinions with facts. He would state the
ideas of Noam Chomsky during assemblies or have complex questions
about AI during presentations. He plays guitar and recently got his 3rd
grade degree with merit.
I remember discussing it with his then class teacher about him teaching
his classmates cubing a few years ago. His refreshing enthusiasm in
classes makes the entire class all the more interested in topics. His
information from the science journals would be upto date. As an educator,
I’ve witnessed hundreds of kids his age and he truly stands out among
them.
I’m an extroverted student. I take part in every political discussion possible and
analyze the social issues deeply to gain an understanding of the topic to form
opinions. There was no better way than participating in a dozen inter-school MUNs
over the years of middle and senior school. I liked the chance to socialize and get a
reason to look into policies and relations of different nations more than getting
awards. It was so empowering that it made me dream of sharing a table with future
world leaders to discuss the issues that matter.

There’s nothing more empowering than having well-informed opinions. In recent

days, I read Aazadi by Arundhati Roy for knowledge and Crime and punishment for
leisure. A Russian psychological thriller I completely adore. Psychology interests me
and I left PE for psychology midway in 11th grade to pursue the subject. I took P.E.
in the first place because my parents bullied me into thinking that I wasn’t cut out for
it. Although, I got way more marks than P.E. in psychology.

Furthermore, to follow my passion for writing; I started working at a startup youth

magazine as an assistant editor and manage social media accounts. It taught me
time management, leadership skills, and the joy of getting published. I also continue
to write my collection of poetry about nature and beauty. John Keats and
Wordsworth influence my work a lot.

For my creative fulfilment, I make canvases. I had two huge compositions

addressing the issue of the stigma around same-sex marriage. I’m also a
professional-level Bharatnatyam dancer. I obtained my diploma at the young age of
15. It gave me exposure to South Indian culture and the knowledge of other classical
dances as well as instruments.
