Paraphrasing – is pertaining to taking a passage that is either spoken or written and rephrasing. It is restating text
giving the meaning in another form.
1. By changing the parts of speech – in this type of paraphrasing, the nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs
interchange.
Original sentence: The student quickly submitted the quiz paper as the Math teacher said that time is up.
Paraphrased: The quick student passed his quiz paper when the teacher in Math said that time is up.
Original sentence: Many people were inspired by the sacrifices and dedication of the frontliners.
Paraphrased: The frontliners’ sacrifices and dedication inspired many people.
3. By synonym replacement
Paraphrasing by synonym replacement is one of the simplest forms in restating an original text.
Original sentence: The older citizens were more vulnerable to the COVID 19 disease.
Paraphrased: Senior citizens were more at risk of the COVID 19 disease.
Original sentence: Gamma rays consist of high energy protons that have neither mass nor charge.
Paraphrased: High-energy protons that do not have mass or charge form Gamma rays.
1. Read the text you are about to summarize over and over again.
2. Identify the main idea of the text you are planning to summarize.
3. Put your feet into your readers’ shoes.
4. Ensure a smooth flow of ideas.
5. Limit your summary to a few sentences.
6. Do not forget to proofread your work.
Example: Taken from the excerpt Understanding Calories
A calorie, also known as kilocalorie, is a unit of energy. This unit represents the energy required to heat a kilogram of
water on degree Celsius. While people generally link the term calorie with food, it is a unit of measurement that can be
applied to any substance possessing energy. For instance, there are 8200 calories in a liter (about one quart) of
gasoline.
Summary: A calorie is a unit of energy that represents the energy required to heat a kilogram of water on degree
Celsius. This is also a unit of measurement where 1 liter of gasoline is composed of 8200 calories.
