Abstract

A professional organization, also known as a professional association, is a group of

individuals in a specific occupation or industry who come together to promote their
common interests and goals. These organizations often provide networking opportunities,
continuing education, and advocacy for the profession. They may also establish
standards of practice, certify practitioners, and provide resources and support for
members. Professional organizations can be found in a wide variety of fields, such as
law, medicine, engineering, and information technology.

1. Introduction:

Figure 1: IEEE

IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), one of the world's largest
professional organizations which was founded in 1884 serves professionals engaged in
the field of the electronic, electrical, and computing fields, as well as related areas of
science and technology. The organization was created to support professionals in their
field and to promote innovation for the betterment of humanity. IEEE's membership is
composed of engineers, scientists, and allied professionals, including computer scientists
and information technology professionals. The organization has grown and evolved over
time, and now includes 39 societies, 130 journals, and over 300 conferences. IEEE is
now a global institution that uses the innovations of its members to enhance its products
and services for members and the public. (IEEE, 2023)

2. Process to join IEEE:

The criteria for becoming one of the members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers (IEEE) can be easy for someone, on the flip side it can be a matter of concern
as well. They call it as the membership. So, membership is open to those individuals who
have demonstrated competence in one of several designated fields, including
engineering, computer science, biology, mathematics, technical, education,
management, and law and policy. It also offers varieties of grades of membership,
consisting of student, graduate student, associate member and senior member. It offers
special categories such as society affiliate, life member and young professional as well.

Figure 2: Process

The required criteria to join several membership grades of IEEE are listed below:

1. Student Member Grade: IEEE Student members must carry at least 50% of
an academic program in IEEE-designated fields which includes the above-
mentioned fields, with an 8-year limit. Upon graduation or reaching the 8-
year limit, students in IEEE-designated fields will become Member and
those outside will become Associate Member.

2. Senior Member Grade: The Senior member grade is the highest for IEEE
and requires 10 years of professional experience and significant
performance in designated fields, such as substantial responsibility or
achievement, publications, technical direction, recognized contributions,
course development, or equivalent contributions that advance progress in
designated fields.
3. There are many other grades with their different criteria to join IEEE i.e.
(Fellow Membership grade, Life member, Formerly Gold, Society Affiliate,
etc.) (IEEE.org, 2022)

2.1 Advantages of Membership:

IEEE membership provides a range of advantages, such as access to technical resources
for professional development, the ability to connect with other industry experts, reduced
fees for attending conferences and events, access to industry standards, and online
access to IEEE publications. You will have exclusive access to resources for career
development and the chance to take on leadership roles and volunteer within the
organization. Additionally, members can be considered for awards and recognition for
their professional achievements.

Figure 3: Benefits

Some of the main advantages of membership of IEEE are listed below:

1. On the platform, members can network not only with the professionals of their
grade but also with other technology professionals.
2. They can create a professional profile to showcase their accomplishments.
3. Members can join and participate in discussions on various technical interests.
4. They can create a group to share and collaborate on projects.
5. Members can discover IEEE events and activities happening around the world.
(IEEE, 2023)

2.2 Disadvantages of Membership:

In a practical point of view, we can analyze some cons of the membership of IEEE
including the cost of membership dues, which can be expensive for some individuals.
Additionally, depending on the level of membership, access to certain resources and
opportunities may be limited. Some members may also find that the focus of the
organization does not align with their specific areas of interest or expertise. Also, some
members may feel that they are not able to benefit from the membership or they are not
getting the desired opportunities or resources.

Figure 4: Disadvantages

Some of the serious disadvantages of membership of IEEE are listed below:

1. Periodic Maintenance
2. Network Security
3. Unauthorized use
4. Cost
5. Limited resources and opportunities
6. Inability to benefit from the membership (Bhatnagar, 2022)

3. Conclusion:

Figure 5: Conclusion

In conclusion, IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) is basically a

nonprofit professional organization situated in the US which focuses on the field of
Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics Communication Engineering, and
Information Technology as well. IEEE membership offers benefits like access to
resources, networking, discounts, standards, and publications. However, it also has
disadvantages like cost, security risks, maintenance, limited resources, and opportunities,
and not being able to benefit from it. It's important to consider if it aligns with professional
goals before joining which basically means before considering the membership just by

viewing the positive sides that is the advantages of membership of IEEE is worthless, one
need to analyze the disadvantages of the membership as well.
