INTRODUCTION
Weeds are known to be unwanted or its virtue has not yet been discovered. Weeds are also
noxious due to its ability to release chemical that is detrimental to its neighboring plants. Somehow,
weeds does have benefits such as source of biofuel, herbal medicine, vegetable, forage, fiber, used in
cosmetics, and more. Weeds was mainly classified according to its gross morphology (grasses, sedges,
and broadleaves).
In this laboratory activity, weeds will be collected and preserved and will submit a herbarium
as a requirement in the enrolled course in AG 103 – Principles of Crop Protection.

OBJECTIVES
In this activity, the students should be able to:
1. Identify different weed species according to its gross morphology
2. Collect different weed species according to its gross morphology, and;
3. Submit a laboratory output (herbarium) on different weed species.

METHODOLOGY
1. Identify the different weeds according to its gross morphology.
2. After identifying the different weed species, collect one (1) sample of each weed species of
each gross morphology.
3. Preserve the collected weeds by placing them between sheets of papers, newspapers or books
to preserve its shape and structure. Put heavy materials to press tightly the weed samples.
4. After pressing the weed samples for two (2) weeks, place it in a 1/8 illustration board.
5. Provide information of the weed species by following the format below:
Example:
Local Name: Cogon grass
Scientific Name: Imperata cylindrica L.
Family Name: Poaceae
Gross Morphology: Grass
Origin: East Africa and Asia
Collector’s Name: Juan Dela Cruz
Course & Year: BSA 1B

6. Submit the accomplished output before final examination.
