Types and Components of Computer

Revision Worksheet

1. Complete the following sentences using the most appropriate words from the
list below.
hard disk drive hardware microphone OCR printer
scanner screen software speaker virus
(a) The physical components of a computer are called: Hardware
(1)
(b) The programs and data of a computer are called: Software
(1)
(c) The device used to input sound is called a: Speaker
(1)
(d) The device used to store data is called a: Hard Disk Drive
(1)

2. A computer consists of hardware and software.

(a) State what is meant by hardware.
[1]
Ans: Hardware are the physical components which make up the computer system.
Each item of hardware have their specific roles in a computer system. Hardware
component scan either be internal or external.
(b) State what is meant by software.
[1]
Ans: Software is a collection of instructions that can be ‘run’ on a computer. These
instructions tell the computer what to do. Software is not a physical thing (but it can
of course be stored on a physical medium such as a CD-ROM), it is just a bunch of
codes. For a computer system to be useful it has to consist of both hardware and
software.

3. There are two types of software.

Name the two types of software used by a computer.
[1]
Ans: Application software and System software are the two types of software used by
the computer.

4.Describe the CPU including its role.

[4]

Ans: The CPU stands for Central Processing Unit, It is the 'brain' of the computer. It is
where all the searching, sorting, calculating and decision making takes place. The
speed of the CPU is measured in Gigahertz (GHz). A 1 GHz CPU can carry out 1 billion
instructions per second! Intel and AMD are the most popular CPU brands.

5. Computer operating systems have developed since early computers used Command
Line Interfaces(CLI). Many computers now use Graphical User Interfaces (GUI), some
of which are capable of using touch screen technology.
Compare and contrast CLI and GUI.
[6]
Ans:
Graphical User Interface (GUI) Command Line Interfaces (CLI).
GUI (Graphical User Interface) is an user CLI requires the user to enter command
interface built around graphics. prompts to interact with the computer.
GUIs are quite easy to use due to the CLI are normally used by expert users as
visual nature of the interface it allows them to is more complicated to
use.
The user has lots of visual clues as to CLI and is not restricted to a number of
what things do. predetermined options.
Example: Windows, Menus, Icons, Examples:
Pointers. ATTRIB: Displays or changes file
attributes.
CD: Displays the name of current
directory

6. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of using a smartphone rather than a

laptop
computer for creating a report.
[6]
Ans:
Advantages:
-A smartphone is very easy to use and is very portable. You can make the report
anywhere for example in a metro.
-Using a laptop is very easy and faster as there is a bigger screen and a big sized
keyboard and a mouse.
Disadvantages:
-A smartphone has a very small screen which can cause eyestrains. It is time
consuming.
-Using a laptop is not very portable you need to have a proper setup to use a laptop.

7. What is the main difference between RAM and ROM?

[4]
Ans:
RAM- Random Access Memory ROM- Read Only Memory
RAM is the part of the computer that ROM normally holds the ‘bootup’
temporarily stores the instructions that instructions to start the computer
the computer is running whilst the data without it the computer wouldn’t know
is being processed by the CPU what to do when on button is switched
On (e.g. the operating system will not
start).
RAM is volatile which means that when ROM is non-volatile memory which
the computer is turned off all data is lost means that memory is not lost when
computer is turned off.

8.What is Virtual Reality? Give two examples in everyday life.

[3]
Ans: Virtual reality is an artificial environment that is created with software. The user
will normally wear a head mounted display which will simulates their physical
presence in places in the real world or imagined worlds.
Uses:
1.Training: Allow professionals to conduct training in a virtual environment without
the threat of any physical harm.
2.Education: Looking inside of an ancient building or ruins.
3.Computer Games: users are able to immerse themselves into a gaming platform.
