DISASTER READINESS AND RISK REDUCTION 101

2nd SEMESTER, SY 2024-2025

Activity No. 1
Name: Ryan Ram G. Royeras
Grade and Section: 12 - STEM F

When Typhoon Odette struck, our lives turned upside down. My Family and I decided
to leave our home, since we are near at the coastal area and seek safety at a
pension house near the Mama Mary Shrine in Maasin City. It was a small, modest
place, but it felt like a safe haven amidst the heavy downpour of the rain and the
gusty winds of the typhoon howled through the streets, tearing at everything in their
path with relentless force. As the Typhoon raged on, we huddled together, listening
to the pounding rain and praying for it to end.

Coping with the aftermath was no easy feat. With food and water in short supply and
no way to communicate, the days that followed felt like an endless struggle. Local
stores were either closed or severely stocked out, making it difficult to find basic
necessities. We relied on what little we had and shared with others in our family
compound ensuring that no one was left behind. It was a humbling reminder of how
people can come together in times of crisis, even when facing the harshest of
circumstances.

We had no control over the typhoon, but we could control how we responded to it.
Typhoon Odette showed us the power of resilience in the face of adversity, and how
every small effort to help others contributed to the larger healing process. The days
following the typhoon were filled with both hardship and hope, as we worked together
to rebuild what was lost. Through it all, we learned that while nature can be
unpredictable and destructive, our strength lies not in avoiding the storm, but in how
we come together and face it head-on."
