GENERATOR VOLTAGE / FIELD CURRENT CHARACTARISTIC
OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of varied excitation (Iƒ) on the generator voltage at a
constant speed.
PROCEDURE:
1. Stator winding is connected as a STAR of Y connection.
2. Set the field switch to manual excitation, set the potentiometer and the prime mover
speed to zero (fully anti clock wise).
3. Switch on the main supply; increase the speed of the prime mover to 3000 r.p.m.
4. Increase the excitation current to change the output voltage in steps from minimum to
maximum of and then in increments back to minimum, record generated voltage and
excitation current (If) at each increment.
NOTE: Take readings progressively (do not go back to take readings) or your results will be
wrong.
5. Repeat the procedure for constant speed of a) 20% (3300rev-min-1) b) 40% (3500rev-min-1)
6. Reduce the speed back and switch OFF the prime mover. Plot curves of voltage against
increasing and decreasing current for each speed, typical shape of the curve at one speed. If
you studied electromagnetic theory, note that your curve have the same shape as a
magnetizing curve. Note that they show effect of hysteresis and that.

DC Voltage Supply
Three phase voltage for prime Mover
Connection cable
Circuit:
In the circuit we apply DC voltage supply for field excitation. We also apply three phase voltage
supply for prime mover. An ammeter is connected in series with DC voltage applied for field
excitation. We connect a Voltmeter to measure voltage (Line to Line) at output of three phase
as shown in figure.

Conclusion
We can clearly see the diff when we are increasing the voltage and then
decreasing voltage
Initially, when we start the motor so the induced magnetic field was zero
After starting the magnetic field is induced
From the graph we concluded that by increasing input voltage the current
increases due to which the induced magnetic flux increases as a result of
which the output line to line voltage increases
Now after we increase the input voltage as 20V
Now we are going to decrease the input voltage gradually
By decreasing voltage, current also decreases as a result output line to line
voltage also decreases
But we will see a little bit difference in output voltage at same voltage
This is because when initially we were increasing input voltage initially
there were no magnetic field initially so output will be smaller than that
when we are now decreasing the input voltage because there was already a

magnetic field generated due to which the output will be a little bit greater
than initial values
Note:
Throughout the experiment we will kept the rmp constant i.e. we will set
rpm of motor to a specific value and then by changing input dc voltage the
output voltage will change
