Grammar & Writing 3B

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This course will allow students to develop English grammatical structures so that they can successfully communicate at a
lower-intermediate level.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLO):


Upon completing this course, students will be able to:
(A) GRAMMATICAL ACCURACY:​ use reasonably accurately a repertoire of frequently used ‘routines’ and patterns associated
with more predictable situations.
(B) ORTHOGRAPHIC CONTROL:​ produce continuous writing which is generally intelligible throughout. Spelling, punctuation
and layout are accurate enough to be followed most of the time.
(C) WRITTEN INTERACTION:​ write personal letters and notes asking for or conveying simple information of immediate
relevance, getting across the point he/she feels to be important.
(D) WRITTEN PRODUCTION:​ write straightforward connected texts on a range of familiar subjects within his/her field of
interest, by linking a series of shorter discrete elements into a linear sequence.
(E) VOCABULARY RANGE: ​use a sufficient vocabulary to express him/herself with some circumlocutions on most topics
pertinent to his/her everyday life such as family, hobbies and interests, work, travel, and current events.

PREREQUISITES: ​Score of level 3B on placement test

INSTRUCTIONAL FORMAT: ​On-site


METHODS OF EVALUATION: ​To successfully complete this course, students must (1) ​attend a minimum of ​80%​ of the
scheduled class hours, (2) successfully acquire the ​80% minimum passing grade​ corresponding to “B-” and, (3)
maintain an ​average GPA of 2.7​ through the enrollment period.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICY:

Assignments The assignments grade includes timely completion of homework, lab work, group 30%
projects and effort in completing assignments correctly.
Midterm The midterm exam is a summative test or project given in the middle of each term. 30%
exam
Final exam The final exam is a summative test or project given at the end of each session. 40%
PLUS
Class conduct A 1-4 teacher rating on class etiquette and participation. The highest rating is 1-4
given to students who: rating
1. Arrive on time and stay in class for the duration of the lesson
2. Speak only ENGLISH in class
3. Respect teachers and classmates
4. Put the cell phone away and focus on the lesson
5. Come prepared and bring completed homework, books and materials
6. Actively participate in class activities completing all classwork
