A SIMULATION APPROACH USING VISSIM ON DESIGN OF TRAFFIC
SIGNAL AT UNCONTROLLED 4-LEGGED URBAN INTERSECTION.
ABSTRACT
The design of traffic signals at four-legged unsignalized intersections is a pivotal aspect of
urban traffic management, especially in the context of Indian road conditions characterized by high-density traffic and diverse vehicle types. This abstract outlines a methodology for the signalization of such intersections to streamline traffic flow and enhance safety. The approach integrates traffic engineering principles with local traffic patterns, considering the heterogeneous mix of vehicles and the unique driving behaviours observed in India. A comprehensive traffic volume study forms the foundation of the design process, capturing the intricate dynamics of Indian traffic. The data collected informs the development of signal timing strategies that accommodate the varying demands of each approach leg. Utilizing the Webster’s method, the cycle length and phase timings are calculated to minimize delays and ensure equitable distribution of green time among all approaches. The signal phases are optimized to reduce the likelihood of congestion and conflicts, considering the prevalent conditions such as frequent stops, mixed traffic streams, and limited road space. Simulation Software like VISSIM is used to model the designed signals, allowing for adjustments and validation before implementation. The result is a signal design that is responsive to the real-time complexities of Indian traffic, promoting a smoother and safer intersection experience.
