Create Digital Pictograms in Adobe Illustrator


A Kind of Self Portrait
Lesson Goals
1. To use SHAPES and the PATHFINDER
TOOL to create PICTOGRAMS of
objects in your backpack, pockets,
purse or classroom.
2. Think of this as a SELF- PORTRAIT of
sorts. The objects we carry tell alot
about who we are and what we do,
think care about.
Directions
1. Read Slides 4-8 about Pictograms

2. Use the step by step Directions Starting on Slide 9 to create a PICTOGRAM of a


camera in Illustrator

3. Then using what you have learned create 4 additional pictograms of items in your
backpack, pockets, purse or other bag you have, or locker.

4. Once you are finished take a screenshot of your final images and add them to
this assignment.
What is a Pictogram
Why are Pictograms used:

Pictograms can transcend language because they can


communicate to speakers of many languages equally
effectively, even if the languages and cultures are
radically different.
Why are Pictograms used:

Pictograms are an important part of User Interface


Design.
Why are Pictograms used:

They make are world visually interesting and easy to


navigate
Why are Pictograms used:

Humans have always used images to tell stories and


share information.

To get started ou will make this

Set up your project:

Label your project: YourLastNamePictogram

Because pictograms are created


for web use you will create an
Illustrator File for the web.
Draw Basic Shapes:
Add the Flash:
Create the Lens Shape:
Combine Shapes:

Open Pathfinder or access Pathfinder option in the Properties Panel


Unite the two Rectangles
Add Color:
Apply Finishing Touches:
NOW IT'S YOUR TURN:

1. Pick 4 items that you find today in your

b. Other bag you are carrying
c. Pockets
d. Locker
2. Create 4 Additional Artboards in the new File you made
3. Make a Layer for each new Artboards
4. Repeat the steps listed in the camera tutorial to create your
OWN PICTOGRAMS
Turn in your Work:

1. Take a 5 Screenshots, one of each


of the Pictograms you made today.
2. Add these images to this assignment
3. Turn it in.
