### The Science of Sleep

Sleep is a vital part of human health, yet it remains one of the least understood
physiological processes. The average adult requires 7-9 hours of sleep per night,
yet many people fall short of this recommendation due to stress, lifestyle choices,
or medical conditions like insomnia. Sleep occurs in cycles, alternating between
non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM) stages. NREM sleep is
essential for physical restoration, as this is when the body repairs tissues and
builds muscle. REM sleep, on the other hand, is closely associated with dreaming
and cognitive functions like memory consolidation. Chronic sleep deprivation can
lead to serious health problems, including heart disease, obesity, and depression.
With the advent of technology, sleep trackers have gained popularity, offering
insights into sleep patterns. However, the key to better sleep often lies in simple
habits: maintaining a consistent bedtime, limiting screen time before bed, and
creating a comfortable sleep environment.
