DRONACHARYA PHYSICS CLASSES

8235825376 FOR SESSION:- 2022-26 BY:- D. Pandit (M.S.C)

GUESS QUESTIONS: - THERMAL PHYSICS (PHY-MJ.7)

LONG QUESTIONS:-
1) Calculate the external work done by an ideal gas undergoing isothermal and
adiabatic expansion. Establish the relation between adiabatic and isothermal
slopes.

2) Show that for a homogeneous fluid Cp – Cv = T(𝜕p/𝜕t)v (𝜕v/𝜕t)p. Also show

that for a perfect gas Cp – Cv = R and for a Vander Waals gas Cp – Cv = R
(1+2α/RTV).

3) Describe the construction and working of carnot engine. Obtain expression

for its efficiency.

4) Define entropy. What is its physical significance? Show that the entropy of a
perfect gas remains constant in reversible process & increase in irreversible
process.

5) Establish Ehrenfest’s equation for second order phase transition.

6) What is T - S diagram? What is the importance of T - S diagram? Find the

expression for efficiency of a reversible Carnot’s engine with the help of T – S
diagram.

7) Define the thermodynamic potentials F, U, G & H and using it to derive

Maxwell’s equation.

8) What is Joule Thomson Effect? Deduce the expression for J – T

cooling produced in a Vander Waals gas. Why it is zero for perfect

9) Derive Maxwell – Boltzmann law for the distribution of the velocities of
molecules of a perfect gas.
10) Find the expression for average velocity, root mean square velocity on the
basis of Maxwell’s distribution of velocities.
11) State and prove law of equipartition of energy. Also calculate γ for mono,
di and triatomic gases.
12) What is transport phenomenon? Derive expression for co-efficient of
viscosity and thermal conductivity of a gas. Hence show that k = ηCv.
13) Deduce Vander Waal’s equation of state for a real gas from the virial
theorem.
14) What do you mean by Mean free path of the gas molecules? Obtain a
relationship between the mean free path and the cross – section of a
molecules. How is mean free path of a molecule determined experimentally?
15) Describe the theory of Adiabatic demagnetisation.
