COORDINATED
FUNCTIONS OF
THE BODY
SYSTEMS
• What is the main function of the
endocrine system?
• How do the hormones secreted by
different glands in our body help in
balancing our body processes?
• How does too much or too little
secretion of these hormones affect
the human body?
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM
Endocrine system is
composed of ductless
glands that secrete
hormones that are
released to the
bloodstream to reach
and cause changes to a
target organ. Hormones
have great impact on
growth, appearance,
emotions, reproductive
functions, and other
body processes.
Glands that Make up the Endocrine
System
• Thymus
• Thyroid gland
• Pituitary gland
• Adrenal gland
• Pancreas
• Parathyroid glands
• Reproductive Glands (Testes and
Ovaries)

GROWTH HORMONE
This hormone targets all tissues and
organs in the body and causes them
to grow. It is especially important in
childhood and adolescence, but in
adults it can stimulate the rate at
which older cells are replaced with
newer cells.
THYROID STIMULATING HORMONE
(TSH)
This hormone does exactly
what its name implies. It
stimulates the thyroid gland
to secrete thyroid hormone.
ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE
(ACTH)
This hormone stimulates
the adrenal cortex (the
outer layer of the adrenal
gland) to secrete its
hormones.
FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE
(FSH)
This hormone’s target organs are the
gonads (the male and female
reproductive organs). In the female, it
stimulates the ovary, causing maturation
of ova and the release of estrogen. In the
male, it stimulates the testes to make
sperms.
LUTEINIZING HORMONE (LH)

This hormone also targets the

gonads. In the female, it
stimulates the ovary, causing
development of a corpus luteum.
In the male, it stimulates the
testes to make testosterone.
PROLACTIN

This hormone is only released

after childbirth. It stimulates
the mammary glands to make
breast milk.
OXYTOCIN

This hormone causes the uterus

to contract during childbirth
and also causes the mammary
glands to release milk during
breastfeeding.
ANTIDIURETIC HORMONE (ADH)
or VASOPRESSIN

This hormone causes

the kidneys to retain
water.
