The Pair of Linear Equation in two Variables

1. In each of the following pair of linear equation, determine whether the pair has a
unique solution, no solution or infinite many solutions
a. 3𝑥 + 𝑦 = 14 ; 2𝑥 + 5𝑦 = 5
b. 3𝑥 + 𝑦 = −4 ; 9𝑥 + 3𝑦 = −12
c. 2𝑥 − 𝑦 = 15 ; 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 18
d. 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 13 ; 4𝑥 − 𝑦 = 10
2. Find the value of k for which each of the following pair of linear equation has an
infinite many solutions
a. 5𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 𝑘 ; 10𝑥 + 4𝑦 = 3
b. 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 7 ; (𝑘 + 2)𝑥 − 3(1 − 𝑘)𝑦 = 5𝑘 + 1
c. 𝑘𝑥 + 3𝑦 = (𝑘 − 3) ; 12𝑥 + 𝑘𝑦 = 𝑘
3. Draw the graphs of the following equations on the same graph paper
2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 12 ; 𝑥−𝑦=1
Find the coordinates of the vertices of triangle formed by the two straight lines on the
Y axis and also determine the area of this triangle.
4. Solve for 𝑥 & 𝑦
a. 3𝑥 − 5𝑦 = −1 ; 𝑥 − 𝑦 = −1
b. 0.4𝑥 + 0.3𝑦 = 2.3 ; 2.5𝑥 − 2𝑦 = −5
3𝑥 5𝑦 𝑥 𝑦 13
c. 2 − 3 = −2 ;3+2= 6
𝑥 𝑦 𝑥 𝑦
d. +4 =3 ;2−4 =1
2
e. 47𝑥 + 31𝑦 = 63 ; 31 𝑥 + 47𝑦 = 15
5. Solve 2x + 3y = 11 and 2x – 4y = – 24 and hence find the value of ‘m’ for which y =
mx + 3.
