INDIVIDUAL REPORT

Name: Syed Ayaan Parvez

Admission Number: S-2299
Centre Number: IN-192
Topic: Employment

Research Question:
How is Artificial Intelligence
changing jobs and the roles of
human workers in different
industries?
Artificial intelligence (AI)1 refers to computer
systems capable of performing complex tasks that
historically only a human could do, such as
reasoning, making decisions, or solving problems.
It is a system for computers that can perform
complicated activities that only a human could do
previously but, in The last few years we have
witnessed the potential impact of AI on different
industries such as employment.
Using AI-enabled intelligent systems in the
workplace has helped to eliminate mundane and
repetitive tasks in order to allow workers to utilize
their expertise to deal with complex and creative
aspects of their work.
Therefore, efficiency and productivity have seen a
boost across sectors.
It brings with it a concern that it could cause job
displacement and require workers to upgrade their
skills in order to stay relevant in a changing job
environment.
Knowing the relative balance required in AI
integration relative to human employment would
be a fruitful direction for the policy development
for effecting the benefits of AI but not without their
costs.
This report analyses how AI will create revolutions
in employment, what it means for human workers,
and the transformations that will take place in the
employment market as it evolves into one with
machines and AI.
Evaluation of Sources:

When evaluating informants about how artificial

intelligence (AI) affects employment, relevance,
and perspective must all be considered. Some of
the sources which are well-known in this regard
have been listed below:

 OECD Report2:
Title: The impact of AI on the workplace: main
findings from OECD AI surveys of employers and
workers
Summary: This report has viewed the role of AI in
the performance and working conditions positively.
It provides an overview of AI's use in the workplace
in different countries.

OECD report says AI is making work easier and

improving job conditions in many places. However,
it also warns that not everyone is ready for these
changes. To make AI fair for all, the report
suggests creating policies that help workers learn
new skills and adapt to AI. It focuses on making
sure everyone gets equal chances and benefits
from AI in jobs.

U.S. Department of Labor Guidelines3:

Title: Artificial Intelligence and Worker Welfare:
Principles and Best Practices for Developers and
Employers
Summary: These guidelines are focused on the
growth of artificial intelligence, employee health,
and guarantees of equitable workplace practices.

AI will have to be developed keeping the

employee's welfare in mind according to the United
States Department of Labor Guidelines. Such
policies are conditioned for the well-being of
workers rather than detracting from their current
working conditions by ability brought about by
such AI technologies. That aspect of productivity is
supposed to be related by the developer or
employer in terms of human living conditions.

These guidelines are meant to allow AI to benefit

both its users and at the same time, protect the
workers. In this way, jobs will be improved by AI
but will remain simple, rather than complicating life
for people.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Blog Post4:

Title: AI Will Transform the Global Economy. Let's

Make Sure It Works for Humanity.
Summary: This article addresses the potential of AI
to impact around 40 percent of jobs all over the
world and recommends the formulation of
balanced policies that will use the benefits of AI
while addressing the problems of inequality in
employment and wealth.
Global Perspective:
AI is transforming the employment situation across
the world; creating opportunities and providing
hurdles, as well as shaping economies on a large
scale. The incorporation of Artificial Intelligence
into various sectors has transformed several
economies across the world.

Positive Impacts:
1.Economic Growth and Productivity5: Perhaps the
fundamental example of the role AI has to play
in each economy is increased productivity to
assist the industries. For example, the
contribution potential of the United States
professional services sector has been recently
shown by improvement in efficiency in both the
manufacturing and health care areas through
the use of AI technologies that are directionally
taking into account economic growth in almost
every definition.

2.Job Creation in Tech and Research6: The rise

of AI has spurred the creation of new job
categories, particularly in technology and
research. Countries like China have seen a surge
in demand for AI specialists, data scientists, and
software developers, fostering innovation and
economic development.

Negative Impacts:

1.Job Loss7: These capabilities of automation have

displaced workers from their routine and
manually operated jobs. Retail, transport, and
manufacturing sectors will face the
unemployment potential under such emerging
technologies, reinforcing calls for reskilling and
counseling programs.

2.Widening Economic Inequality8:

The use of AI technologies is not a common
feature for everyone. They are generally available
to wealthy countries and corporations; hence
economic inequalities that exist between countries
and societies have the risk of worsening further.
While the richest might use AI to boost growth, a
country with more advanced technology would
probably be left behind and struggle to catch up.
Rich companies investing in AI would dominate
markets and their increased profits would leave
smaller businesses struggling. Thus, the growing
divide could increase economic inequality globally.

National Perspective:
I've witnessed the growing influence of Artificial
Intelligence (AI) in our country India . AI is making
a profound impact on the employment landscape,
not only by affecting economic growth but also
influencing various aspects of the workforce,
including skill development, job quality, and
inequality. Here's how AI is shaping the job market
in India from having different approaches.

Skill Development and Upskilling9:

Among the many advantages that AI has come
with, one essential is the implication it carries for
skill development in the future. With the
advancement of AI, demand is expected to
increase for tech-related skills such as data science
and machine learning even more today, and AI
programming thereafter. It does mean that the
education map has changed in favor of students
towards courses in these fields. In India, there are
clearly many initiatives-a case in point being the
mountain offers-with which training for the
workforce on new-age skills is rapidly making
grounds encouraged by the calls of "the world has
changed." Well, according to this report, "India's
job market is increasingly demanding specialized
skills, and AI plays a critical role in filling that gap."
Job Polarization10:
The introduction of advanced technologies does
not lead to upgrading of job skills; instead, the very
technologies in question have resulted in job
polarization in India. Various routine and manual
jobs such as agriculture, construction, and retail
are on the way to automation. This has convinced
most people that it will be quite easy to create a
wider gap between the highly skilled and the low
skilled. With AI replacing low-skilled work, it is
going to get tougher for anyone without advanced
skills to get to the fold of a stable, well-paying job
because around that situation the extremes of
income inequality deepen. As said by research,
"The effect of AI enabling has brought about an
actual two-tier job market structure in India with an
increasing stark divide between skilled and
unskilled labor".
Local Perspective:
As I see it in the Indian context, there are
challenges as well as opportunities concerning AI in
the employment landscape. AI alters the way
various industries function, creating an entirely
different set of jobs in technology, data science,
and machine learning. In all such areas, the extent
to which AI has proved its worth-a-it is quite clear:
efficiency improvement for health care,
manufacturing, and education as speed increases
and precision enhances. For instance, the impact of
AI technologies is that, at this moment, they
already help Indian doctors make more accurate
diagnoses and in manufacturing, their optimal
production rates maximize while their mistake rate
minimizes.
Reflection:
I found it essential to explore multiple Internet
resources to piece together an understanding of
artificial intelligence, along with its implications on
the employment scenario. Initially, my focus was
on reputable sources such as articles, research
papers, and comprehensive reports obtained from
reputable organizations. CEPR, IABAC, Drishti IAS
formed part of the brilliant source pool to gain full
knowledge concerning how AI impacts the jobs
marketplace-notably beyond the borders of India.
Such resources informed about the bright
prospects emerging opportunities and skills for
qualification improvement. It talked about the dark
shadows such as loss of jobs and unequal
distribution of wealth among the workers in
society.
For example, aside from the academic sources, I
gleaned through various news outlets and reports,
including Times of India to understand better the
government strategies with added emphasis on the
critical need for workforce reskilling. The
experience rendered a grasp of a ground reality
how AI spews fire, leaving employees and
enterprises grappling with its impact and
essentially calls for the adoption of that change by
India.

Through this extensive research process, I have

developed a very subtle understanding of the fact
that AI is both a great opportunity and a significant
challenge in employment. I realize that AI can open
new avenues in work, but it poses questions about
how we train and upgrade our workforce. With this
insight, I am in a better position to have wise
conversations about tech and employment,
whether in the realm of policy development or
material contribution toward AI development, so
that the workforce remains richly equipped and
relevant in a world centered increasingly on AI.
