Write your answers on the separate answer sheet.

PART TWO: READING COMPREHENSION

Task Two
Read the text below. Then read the questions that follow it and choose the best answer to each
question, marking your answers on your answer sheet.

Dress Codes
Just like clothes and bodies, dress codes come in many shapes and forms. Dress codes are
guidelines for employees, students, or those attending special events about what is considered
appropriate or acceptable clothing.
Dress codes can be helpful when planning a social event. Thus, guests know they have to
dress up in formal gowns and tuxedos for a black-tie event. If a wedding invitation says
“beach casual”, guests know to dress down in khaki shorts or sundresses.
One of the most common dress codes in the Western world is business casual. But
addressing dress code issues in a business environment isn’t easy. At some workplaces,
business casual means it’s okay to wear dark jeans with a collared shirt. At others, it means
it’s fine to go without a tie or a jacket.
Dress code debates often heat up in the summer months when students and employees
naturally want to stay cool and comfortable. How can schools enforce dress codes when they
don’t have air-conditioning? Why can’t men wear shorts if it’s acceptable for women? Is it
impractical to ask women to cover their shoulders or arms? How long must dresses, skirts, or
shorts be to be considered “appropriate”?
Some teachers and administrators say that dress codes are essential in schools, because
girls often wear clothes that are too distracting. In contrast, many students and parents
complain that school dress codes embarrass girls and make them feel uncomfortable about
their bodies. Some argue that requiring special clothing at school is also economically and
culturally discriminatory. Is it a teacher’s role to act as the fashion police?

1
26. What is the article mainly about?
A) Dress codes in the business world.
B) Dress codes at social events.
C) The pros and cons of dress codes.

27. What type of clothing is NOT mentioned in the article?

А) Summer wear.
В) Winter wear.
С) Wedding wear.

28. What does the article say about black-tie events?

А) Weddings are always black-tie events.
В) It is appropriate to wear business casual at these events.
С) Guests at these events should dress up in a formal manner.

29. In context, what does “beach casual” refer to?

А) A typical business dress code in the Western world.
В) An informal team-building dress code at some workplaces.
С) Casual wear acceptable at some non-traditional social events.

30. According to the article, why does the topic of dress codes stir up more
discussions in summer?
А) Schools’ administrators have air-conditioned offices, but students don’t.
В) People want to be cool and comfortable, but dress codes don’t always allow that.
С) Employees think dress codes should remain the same in all seasons.

Task Three
Read the text below. Then read the questions that follow it and answer each question with a
sentence of your own. Write your answers on your answer sheet. Sentences copied word for
word from the text will get 0 points.
Are You Passionate about Your Work?
How important is it to love your work? Some people say it’s the key to happiness. You
spend so much time at your job that it has to be something you’re passionate about. Is it
possible to adore your job no matter what you do? Your attitude toward your job can go a
long way.
Other people say you have to at least feel valued in your workplace. Your dream job may
still be a hobby, but the work you do must make a difference to people’s lives. A supportive
pest control worker or plumber improves the quality of life of his customers.
2
Feeling challenged on the job is also important. A job that requires very little effort is hard
to do for a long time. Your night job may even turn out to be a stepping stone to your future
career.
The people we work with have a lot to do with job satisfaction, too. You may be
passionate about the work but hate your boss or co-workers. On the other hand, you may be
your own boss and work from home but miss interaction with colleagues.
The money you earn on the job is also important. Do you earn enough money to meet
your basic needs? Is there a little leftover for your savings and recreation account? If you
think you deserve more than you earn, you may be miserable at work. Asking for a raise may
be your solution. Some people get stuck in a rut at work. They don’t leave a dead-end job
because they get too comfortable.
Think back to when you were a small child. What was your answer when people asked
what you wanted to be when you grew up? Some experts say that our childhood dreams are
the jobs we are meant to do.

31. In the context of the first paragraph, what is the key to job satisfaction?

32. Why does the author of the article mention a plumber?

33. According to the author of the article, what may be a stepping stone to a future
career?

34. What may some self-employed people who work from home miss?

35. What advice is offered at the end of the article?

China has announced ambitious plans to drastically reduce single-use plastics by 2025. In
January 2020 China's National Development and Reform Commission introduced a number
of measures designed to cut the production and use of plastics over the next five years. It
announced that by the end of 2020, non-biodegradable plastic bags would be banned in
supermarkets and shopping malls in major cities. The ban also applied to food delivery
services, which use vast amounts of plastics. Single-use plastic straws and cutlery used by
food takeaway services were also to be banned nationwide by the end of the same year. China
encouraged the use of alternative materials such as non-plastic products and biodegradable
shopping bags.
Single-use plastics are one of the world's biggest sources of plastic pollution. They have
become an inseparable part of daily life and a part of our throwaway culture. The Chinese
authorities set a goal of reducing the "intensity of consumption" in order to reverse our
reliance on single-use plastics. Previous regulations to restrict plastic use, in 2008, led to an
estimated cut in plastic bag production of 67 billion bags. The United Nations said it is urgent
that all countries adopt policies similar to those China introduced. It said: "We are already
unable to cope with the amount of plastic waste we generate, unless we rethink the way we
manufacture, use and manage plastics."

Presenter: Welcome to our radio show “Camera Club”. This week with us is photographer
Tim Freeman.
Tim: Thanks for the invitation. I know many of you have just taken up photography, so I want
to give you my 6...well, I suppose it’s really 5 top tips for taking great photos.
Presenter: Excellent!
Tim: Let me start with
TIP ONE – Look your subject in the eye! When photographing someone, hold the camera at
their eye level. For children, don’t be afraid to bend down. It really gives the photo a personal
feel.

3
TIP TWO – Move in close. If the person looks small, take a step or two closer before taking
the picture. But don’t get too close.
TIP THREE – Don’t always have a building in the middle! The centre of your picture is not
the best place for a building. Bring your picture to life by simply moving it off-centre. What
about the top left corner, for example?
TIP FOUR – Watch the light. The most important part of every picture is the light. During the
day, bright sunlight can look very hard. Try to take pictures early morning or late evening
when the light is soft. This is particularly good when photographing landscapes.
TIP FIVE – Use a plain background. Take time to study the surrounding area. Really look
through the camera lens carefully. We’ve all seen photos which make someone look like an
alien from outer space because poles appear from the top of their head! [laughter]
The last thing I want to say is – enjoy trying different things!
