EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
RESPONSE TO ENGINE FAILURE MALFUNCTIONS
How do you respond to engine failure
1. Determine exactly which engine failed.
2. Keep flying on remaining engines.
3. Undo whatever you did just previously. e.g. If you have just switched
fuel tanks, switch them back.
4. Attempt a restart.
5. Attempt a restart.
6. Attempt a restart.
7. Determine a nearby airport.
8. Fly to the airport and perform a normal landing.
How do you deal with engine failure?
In the event of an engine failure:
1. Stay off the brake – you may need the momentum to pull off the road –
steer firmly.
2. Keep eyes on open target area - where you want the car to go.
3. Quickly shift to neutral and attempt to restart – if that fails take an open
escape path.
4. Turn off ignition.
What is the first action in dealing with an engine failure?
Selecting carburettor heat HOT is the first action, other than flying the aeroplane, to be
taken in the event of any engine failure, and if carburettor icing is the cause of an
engine failure it should re-establish smooth engine running.
