Semi Detailed Lesson Plan in Strength of Materials

Code: AST 223

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson the student should be able to:

a. Define and understand the concept of stress

b. Analyze and calculate problems related to stress

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Stress
B. References: Strength of Materials (Fourth Edition) Ferdinand L. Singer,
Andrew Pytel
Mechanics of Materials (sixth Edition) Ferdinand P. Beer, E. Russell
Johnston, Jr
C. Materials: Illustrations/ Laptop/ Powerpoint presentation / Monitor

III. Procedure
A. Preparation
1. Prayer
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Review
4. Motivation
The teacher will ask the students to answer the questions related to
stress.
5. Setting of Objectives
The teacher presents the objectives of the lesson.

B. Presentation
1. Activity
The teacher will let the students observe the picture.
2. Analysis
The teacher will ask some questions from the previous activity.
a. What do you think of the picture?
b. How did the figure relate to the topic?

3. Abstraction
The teacher will discuss about the concept of stress and how to
calculate problems related to stress.

4. Application
The teacher will let the students answer the given problems.
1. A nylon string has a diameter of 2mm, pulled by a force of 100N.
Determine the stress.
2. A metal wire is 2.5mm diameter and 2m long. A force as 12N is
applied to it and it stretches 0.3mm. assume the material is
elastic. Determine the stress
IV. Evaluation
Directions: Answer the following question to prove if you really understand the
lesson. Write your answer in a short bond paper.

1. A string 4mm in diameter has original length 2m. The string is pulled by a
force of 200N. If the final length 2m. If the final length of the spring is 2.02m,
determine the stress.

2. A steel bar is 10mm diameter and 2m long. It is stretched with a forced of 20

kN and extends by 0.2mm. Calculate the stress.

3. How important to understand the concept of stress?

V. Assignment
Research on the normal and the shear stress.
