Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Strength of Materials


I. Objectives
At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:
a. define simple strain;
b. calculate problems involving simple strain.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Simple Strain
B. References: AST 223 Strength of Materials Module pp. 29-31
C. Materials: Manila Paper/ Cartolina/ Chalkboard/ Chalk

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Review
The teacher asks the following questions as a sort of review on bearing stress:
a. What is bearing stress?
b. What do you think are the causes of bearing stress?

4. Motivation
At this point, the teacher will have a short game entitled “Jumbled Letters”. All
they have to do is to identify the word described in the definition.

1) MESLPI- is a plain, basic, or uncomplicated form, nature, or design; without


much decoration or ornamentation.
2) NRTISA- a force, influence, or factor causing such tension.

5. Setting of Objectives
The teacher will state the objectives of the lesson to the students.
B. Activity
The teacher will let the students observe the picture

C. Analysis
After the activities, the following questions will be asked for knowledge processing:
1. What do you think of the picture?
2. Can you guess where is the simple strain?
3. How does simple strain differ from stress (previous lesson)?

D. Abstraction
From the process, the teacher will discuss and introduce the following:
1. What is the definition of simple strain?

Simple Strain
 is a unitless measure of how much an object gets bigger or smaller from an applied load.
 is the deformation of material from stress.
 is the ratio of the change in length caused by the
applied force, to the original length.

There are two types of strain that a structure can experience:


1. Normal Strain-when a force acts perpendicular or "normal" to the surface of an object, it
exerts normal stress.

2. Shear Strain- when a force acts parallel to the surface of an object, it exerts shear stress.

2. How is simple strain calculated?

Simple Strain can be calculated by taking the ratio of change length over original length. It is
identified using the formula:
𝜀=δ / L
 𝜀 is the strain due to stress applied
 δ is the change in length
 L is the original length of the material

Example:

Example of the computation of strain:


1. An elastic band of length 5 cm is stretched such that its length increases by 2 mm.
Compute the strain.
E. Application
The teacher will let the students do the following exercises:
1. An iron bar 3 m long is heated. It stretches by 0.5 mm. Compute the strain.

2. An elastic rubber band with a length of 10 cm is stretched such that its length increases
by 4 mm. Compute the strain.

IV. Evaluation
Directions: Answer the following problems to prove if you understand the lesson. Show
your solutions.
1. A brass rod of length 1 m is fixed to a vertical wall at one end, keeping the other end free
to expand. When the temperature of the rod is increased by 120◦C, the length increases
by 3 cm. What is the strain?

2. A steel wire 2 m long is suspended from the ceiling. When a mass is hung at its lower
end, the increase in length recorded is 1 cm. Determine the strain of the wire.

3. An iron bar 5 m long is heated. It stretches by 0.10 mm. Compute the strain.

V. Assignment
Directions: Solve the following problems. Write it in your assignment notebook.
1. A bronze wire 4 m long is suspended from the ceiling. When a mass is hung at its lower
end, the increase in length recorded is 2 cm. Determine the strain of the wire.

2. A brass rod of length 3 m is fixed to a vertical wall at one end, keeping the other end free
to expand. When the temperature of the rod is increased by 140◦C, the length increases
by 2 cm. What is the strain?
