AUTO FLIGHT - GENERAL

1. Scope
A. This chapter describes those units and components which furnish a means of automatically controlling
the flight of the airplane. (Refer to Figure 1).

2. Definition
A. This chapter consists of one section to aid maintenance personnel in locating information. Following
is a brief description of this section.
(1) Aerodynamic load alleviating describes that system or portion of the system that automatically
corrects/provides for gust loading/upset, aerodynamic augmentation/alleviation/suppression,
ride control, etc.

3. Description
A. 400A/B Nav-O-Matic Autopilot System (Optional).
(1) The Cessna 400A/B Nav-O-Matic Autopilot (optional) is a two-axis automatic flight control
system that governs the positions of the ailerons and elevators. About the roll axis, it provides
lateral stability, heading hold, command turn, and automatic intercept and tracking of any VOR
radial. In addition to holding the wings level and compensating for rotation about the pitch axis,
the system provides an automatic intercept and track of any magnetic heading or VOR radial.
About the pitch axis, it provides command pitch attitude hold, airplane altitude hold, automatic
pitch trim, and an optional ILS coupler.
(2) The 400A autopilot system consists of one each vacuum directional gyro and attitude gyro,
controller, roll actuator, computer amplifier, pitch actuator, trim follow-up actuator, trim sensor,
cable assemblies, autopilot disengage switch, and associated electrical wiring.
(3) The 400B autopilot system consists of a directional gyro, attitude gyro, controller, aileron
actuator, elevator actuator, elevator trim actuator, computer, altitude sensor, airspeed sensor
switch, autopilot disengage switch, electric trim disengage switch, cable assemblies, and
associated electrical wiring. The elevator trim actuator acts as autopilot pitch control as well as
electric trim control.
(4) The following offerings are options to the basic autopilot: ILS approach coupler and slaved
directional gyro. The ILS approach coupler enables the pilot to fly inbound on ILS front course
or back course, this option is installed in the computer and connects to the indicator at the nose
junction box. The slaved directional gyro replaces the standard directional gyro and provides
heading information for the 400A Nav-O-Matic.
(5) Refer to Cessna 400A Nav-O-Matic Autopilot Service/Parts manual, for additional information
of components, troubleshooting, and wiring diagrams.

CAUTION: Primary and secondary flight control cables, push-pull tubes,

bellcranks and mountings on late model airplanes use dual locking
fasteners. The lock nuts for these fasteners incorporate a fiber
lock, and are castellated for safetying with a cotter pin. When any
of these areas are disconnected on any airplane, new dual locking
fasteners should be installed. See the Airplane Parts Catalog for
part numbers and location of these fasteners.
B. Integrated Flight Control System.
(1) The Integrated Flight Control System (optional) is a two axis (aileron and elevator) automatic
flight control system consisting of the autopilot and flight director. Either the flight director or the
autopilot may be used separately or as a combination. As an autopilot, in addition to holding
the wings level and compensating for rotation about the pitch axis, the autopilot provides
an automatic intercept and track of any magnetic heading or VOR radial. Also included is
an automatic pitch trim, turn command, pitch command, altitude hold, and an ILS approach
feature. As a flight director, the integrated flight control system provides steering information,

AERODYNAMIC LOAD ALLEVIATING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. Yaw Damper System

A. Description.
(1) The yaw damper system is an independent system consisting of a gyro-computer (turn and slip
indicator), control switch, yaw actuator and disengage switch, cables assemblies, and electrical
wiring.
(2) The gyro picks up the signal, routes it through a built-in computer in the gyro, amplifies the
signal and sends the amplified signal to the yaw actuator, located in the tailcone. The yaw
damper control switch is mounted separately from the flight controller on all installations except
the 800 integrated flight control system (IFCS). On airplanes incorporating the 800 IFCS the yaw
damper control switch is part of the autopilot flight controller. The yaw damper disengage switch
is located on the left control wheel.
(3) The yaw actuator, located in the tailcone is mounted to a bracket attached to a bulkhead and
supported by support brackets. The yaw damper actuator drives a chain which is attached to
cable assemblies, connected to the rudder bellcrank.

CAUTION: Primary and secondary flight control cables, push-pull tubes,

bellcranks, and mountings use dual locking fasteners. The
lock nuts for these fasteners incorporate a fiber lock, and are
castellated for safetying with a cotter pin. When any of these areas
are disconnected, new dual locking fasteners should be installed.
See the Airplane Parts Catalog for part numbers and location of
these fasteners.
