103. State change that you would make to convert an A.C. generator into a D.C. generator.

Illustrate the change by a diagram.

Ans. The only change is that both the slip-rings of an A.C. generator are replaced by a split-ring
(X–Y)

104. (i) Draw a neat labelled diagram of a d.c. motor.

(ii) Write any one use of a d.c motor.

[Board Question]

Ans. (i) Diagram of a d.c. motor.

(ii) A DC motor is commonly used for driving electric vehicles.

105. Draw a neat labelled diagram of an A.C. generator.

[Board Question]

Ans. The diagram of A.C. generator is shown below.

106. State Fleming’s left hand rule.
OR
Name and state the law used to find the direction of force on a current carrying conductor kept
in a magnetic field.
Ans. Fleming’s Left Hand Rule: According to it, if we stretch forefinger, central finger and the
thumb of our left hand mutually perpendicular to each other such that the forefinger indicates
the direction of the magnetic field and the central finger indicates the direction of current, then
the thumb will indicate the direction of force on the conductor.
107. State Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction.
Ans. Faraday’s laws of electromagnetic induction are:
(i) Whenever there is a change in magnetic flux linked with a coil, an e.m.f. is induced.
(ii) The magnitude of the induced e.m.f. is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic
flux linked with the coil.
108. A transformer is used to change a high alternating e.m.f. to a low alternating e.m.f. of the
same frequency.
(a) Identify the type of transformer used for the above purpose.
(b) State whether the turns ratio of the above transformer is = 1 or >1 or <1.

Ans. (a) The transformer used is step down transformer.

(b) Turns ratio =

=
In this case Ns is less than Np, hence turns ratio is less than 1.

109. Name and state the law which determines the direction of induced current.
OR
State Fleming’s right hand rule.
Ans. Fleming’s Right Hand Rule: It states that if we stretch the thumb, the forefinger and the
central finger of our right hand mutually perpendicular to each other such that the forefinger
indicates the direction of magnetic field and the thumb indicates the direction of motion of the
conductor, then the central finger will indicate the direction of induced current.

110. The diagram below shows a loop of wire carrying current I:

(i) What is the magnetic polarity of the loop that faces us ?

(ii) With respect to the diagram how can we increase the strength of the magnetic field produced
by this loop?
[Board Question]
Ans. (i) South
(ii) By passing a stronger current.
111. A magnet kept at the centre of two coils A and B is moved to and fro as shown in the diagram.
The two galvanometers show deflection.
[Board Question]

State with a reason whether:

x>y
or x < y.
[x and y are magnitudes of deflection]
Ans. x < y because coil B has more number of turns hence there will be a greater change in
magnetic flux linked with the coil B.
112. The adjacent diagram shows a small magnet placed near a solenoid. State whether the magnet
is attracted or repelled, as the switch is pressed. Give a reason.
Ans. As the switch is pressed, the magnet will get repelled. The reason is that at the face of
solenoid near the North pole of magnet, the current flows in anticlockwise direction, so the face
becomes North pole. The like poles repel, so the magnet is repelled.
113. What is a solenoid? Why do we usually keep its diameter small in comparison to its length?

Ans. If a conducting wire (coated with an insulating paint or varnish) is closely wound on a (long)
cylindrical core, the resulting coil is referred to as a solenoid. It is usual to keep the diameter of
the solenoid small compared to its length. This is done to have more number of turns in the
solenoid for the same length of the wire. If a longer wire is used then resistance increases and it
causes heating of solenoid.
114. The diagram shows a current carrying coil passing through a cardboard sheet. Draw three
magnetic lines of force on the board.

State two factors on which magnitude of magnetic field at the centre depends.
Ans. Figure shows the magnetic lines of force due to current carrying coil.

The magnitude of magnetic field at the centre of coil depend on: (i) the strength of current in the
coil, and (ii) the number of turns in the coil.
115. In the diagram XY is a straight conductor carrying current in the direction marked by the
arrow. The conductor is held vertical by passing it through a horizontal cardboard sheet. Draw
three magnetic lines of force on the board and mark the direction of magnetic field in your
diagram. State two factors on which magnitude of magnetic field at a point, depends.
Ans. The magnetic lines of force due to current in the straight conductor XY are shown in figure
given alongside. The arrows on the magnetic lines of force shows the direction of magnetic field.
The magnitude of magnetic field at a point depends on:
(i) The strength of current in the conductor, and
(ii) The distance of point from the conductor.
116. (i) A straight wire conductor passes vertically through a piece of cardboard sprinkled with
iron filings. Copy the diagram and show the setting of iron filings when a current is passed
through the wire in the upward direction and the cardboard is tapped gently. Draw arrows to
represent the direction of the magnetic field lines.

(ii) Name the law which helped you to find the direction of the magnetic field lines.
Ans. (i)

(ii) Right hand thumb rule.

117. You have been provided with a solenoid AB.
(i) What is the polarity at end A?
(ii) Give one advantage of an electromagnet over a permanent magnet.

Ans. (i) North pole.
