Research questions
1.What is Plastic?
Plastic may be defined as a material that contains an essential ingredient an
organic substance of large molecular weight. It is also defined as polymers of long
carbon chains.

2. What are the different types of plastic?

 Acrylic or Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA)
 Polycarbonate (PC)
 Polyethylene (PE)
 Polypropylene (PP)
 Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE or PET)
 Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
 Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS)

3. What are the functions or uses of plastics?

It is used in numerous packaging applications including containers,
bottles, drums, trays, boxes, cups and vending packaging, baby
products and protection packaging.

4. What are the negative effects of plastic?

The negative effects of plastic are:
1. Environmental Impact: Most plastics aren’t biodegradable. All that
discarded plastic builds up as pollution, which can harm wildlife.
2. Health Hazards: Some plastics have chemicals, such as bisphenol A (BPA)
and phthalates, which can drain out of the plastic and into food, water, and
the environment.
3. Difficulty with Recycling: Not all types of plastic are easily recyclable, which
can make proper disposal very challenging. Additionally, even recycling
processes can have negative environmental impacts since they require a
great amount of energy and resources.
4. Litter and Waste: Because plastic products are so common, and don’t
biodegrade easily, they build up as waste in our landfills, oceans, and other
natural environments. This can lead to negative environmental impacts and
health hazards for humans and wildlife.

5. What is recycling?
Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into
reusable objects to prevent waste of possibly useful
materials, and to reduce energy usage, therefore benefitting
the environment.

6. How plastic are recycled?

Once the plastics are sorted and cleaned, plastic can either be shredded into
flakes or melt processed to form pellets before finally being moulded into
new and recycled products.

7. What are recycled plastic products?

Some recycled plastic products are: Laundry detergent bottles, oil bottles,
pens, recycling containers, floor tiles, drainage pipes, lumber, benches,
doghouses, picnic tables, fencing and shampoo bottles.
