LIQUID – LIQUID EXTRACTION
(Miscible Solvents)
Aim : To prepare the ternary phase diagram of Binodal curve and tie line
relationship for ternary system.
Apparatus : Burette, pipette, conical flask, beaker, separating funnel.
Chemicals : Chloroform, Acetic acid, 0.1 N NaOH, Phenolphthalein.
System used : Water- Chloroform-acetic acid
Theory : The separation of compounds of liquid mixture by treatment with solvents in
which one or more compounds are preferably soluble is known as Liquid-Liquid Extraction.
It is complementary to distillation and two methods together unable almost all separation to
be achieved. The overall process of :-
1) To bring the solvent and solute in intimate contact
2) Separation of resulting two phases
The formation of new mixtures can be shown on the bimodal curve. This represents
two phases region which will split into two layers in equilibrium with each other. The
composition of this layer can be represented by tie line PQ and point F on bimodal curve
represented as a single phase known as plait point.
Observation :
Density of acetic acid = 1.038 gm/cc
Density of water = 1 gm/cc
Density of Chloroform = 1.4 gm/cc
Observation Table:
Phase 1
CHLOROFORM WATER ACETIC ACID
Calculations :
Weight % of acetic acid in water layer (Extract)
N1V1 = N2V2
Where N2= Normality of NaOH
V2= Volume of NaOH (Burette reading)
V1= Volume of extract
gm of acetic acid in extract (W1) = N1x Eq.wt. x Vol. of extract / 1000
Weight % of acetic acid in extract = (W1x WE) x100
Same procedure is repeated to calculate wt% acetic acid in raffinate.
Result : Binodal curve is obtained as shown. The concentration of acetic acid in extract
and raffnate is calculated and tie line is drawn.
