Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each
lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM.
This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need
to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of
the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-
check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each activity and test. We
trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how
they can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of
this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests.
And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

What I Need to Know

This module was design and written to help you understand the skills of
comparing and contrasting the things and information around you. You may use
this knowledge in your everyday lives.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. compare and contrast the information heard (EN3OL-IIIi-j-1.9)

1.1 define compare and contrast;
1.2 analyze and evaluate information; and
1.3 use Venn Diagram to compare and contrast.

What I Know

Compare and contrast the two objects.

Made up of fabric to repel water.

Both can be used during rainy season.

Made up of plastic and it has handle

You can wear it to protect you from rain.

You can hold it tight to protect you from rain.

1
What can you say about the umbrella? Choose your answer inside the circle.
What can you say about the raincoat? Choose your answer inside the circle.
Now, what do they have in common? Write your answer in your notebook.

Lesson
Compare and Contrast
1 Information Heard

Comparing and contrasting are two important skills because these help us
organize information more effectively. Both can be used in our everyday lives.
Now, what do compare and contrast mean?
To compare means to identify similarities between two objects. It means the
same. We might find some signal words within the text that make comparing
two or more objects easier. Some of these words or phrases are: similar,
similarly, in the same way, the same as, both, like, in common, as well as and
also. On the other hand, contrast means to identify differences. It tells what the
difference between two objects is. Words and phrases like differ, different,
difference, however, but, although, even though, on the other hand and while
are keywords use to highlights contradicting.

A Venn Diagram is a tool used to organize similarities and differences. It is

composed of two circles that overlap. In the middle we put what is alike between
the two objects and on the sides, we put how the two objects differ. It is a great
way to organize your thoughts when you are comparing two objects.

Notes to the Teacher

This module is preparing the learner to know how to compare

and contrast the two objects by giving their similarities and
differences.

What’s New

Read the story. Compare and contrast the two girls.

Friendship Bond
For many years, Ali and Leah have been good friends though they differ in many ways.
Ali is a Muslim while Leah is a Christian. Ali goes to the mosque on Friday and Leah
goes to church on Sundays. Ali is two years older than Leah although she is shorter than
Leah. Ali excels more in Mathematics than Leah though Leah performs better in Arts. Leah
loves to eat food like Adobong Manok. On the other hand, Ali likes to eat fruits and
vegetables.
For them, it does not matter how different persons are as long as they understand
each other. This is what makes their friendship last.

(Reference: Let’s Get Better in English 3 TG.pp.267-268. First Edition)

From the story Friendship Bond, compare and contrast the characteristics of
the two girls using the Venn Diagram in your notebook. In one circle write all
the things that tells about Ali and in the other circle write all the things that
tells about Leah. In the center where they overlap, write the things that they
have both in common also known as similarities.

What’s More
Read the short selection about roses and orchids. Complete the compare and
contrast chart below. Write your answers in your notebook.
Orchids and roses are flowers that are famous for their beauty. Both have
petals that burst with different colors and fragrant – smelling scents. Roses can
grow up to eight feet tall while orchids stay around to two to three feet tall. In
contrast to roses, orchids do best indoors. Roses require soil and full sun
exposure while orchids need careful exposure to light. Roses can also produce
up to 50 petals for each flower. However, orchids produce flat five-petaled
flowers. Different they may be, but both can be useful to people. Orchids can be
used to make perfumes and medicines. On the other hand, roses can be used as
decorations and as ingredients for a hearty salad.
