Experiment 6 Frequency Response Methods

Objectives

To explore the Frequency Response of a Control System.

New MATLAB commands to learn in this experiment

Command Description
bode(n, d) Enter help bode in the Matlab Command Window for a detailed description.

Procedure

Section-1

 A closed-loop system with a proportional controller K is shown below.

Controller Plant
R(s) 1 Y(s)
K
(s + 1)(s + 10)

 Determine the loop-transfer function of the above system for K=1 manually and verify
the transfer function using MATLAB. Use variable sys for the transfer function.

G(s) =

 Following is the MATLAB command used for the Bode magnitude and phase plots.

>> bode(sys) ;

 Sketch the Bode plot in the following space.

 Use the MATLAB command nyquist(sys) for the Nyquist plot of the above system
for controller gains K=1, 20 and 50. Sketch all three polar plots in the following space.

How the increasing gain affects the Nyquist plot?
