What is Engineering

Drawing?

BY: Jitendra Kumar Singh, KIET-ME Deptt

O Engineering drawing is a formal and
precise way of communicating
information about the shape, size,
features and precision of physical
objects.
O Drawing is the universal language of
engineering.

Drawing Sheets
O As per I.S.I. standard ratio of length and
width remains . I.S.I. has designated the
different sheet sizes are shown in Table:

S. No. Designati Size Untrimme

LETTERING
O In particular places these standard height
of letters are recommended by I.S.I. :

S. Particular place Height in

No. mm
1 Drawing no. & Name of Firm 10 or 12
2 Heading of work 8
3 Subtitles, information & 5 or 6
material list
4 Dimensions, any change and 2,3 or 4
tolerances

Classification of
lettering:
O Double stroke
O Single stroke
O Roman and Italics

Important note: The lettering ratio 7:4 or 5:4 is used in engineering

practice.

Methods of
dimensioning
O There are basically two types of
dimensioning system:
1: Aligned system
2: Unidirectional system

Projection
O The shadow or image of an object
obtained on a piece of paper is
known as projection.
O Types:
1: Pictorial projection
2: Orthographic projection.

BY: Jitendra Kumar Singh, KIET-ME Deptt

Pictorial projection
O The projection in which the length, breadth
and height of an object is shown in single
view is known as Pictorial Projection.
types:
1. Perspective projection
2. Axonometric projection
1. Diametric projection
2. Trimetric projection
3. Isometric projection
3. Oblique projection
BY: Jitendra Kumar Singh, KIET-ME Deptt
1: Perspective
projection
O The the type of pictorial projection in
which all projector converge or meet
at a point is known as perspective
projection.

BY: Jitendra Kumar Singh, KIET-ME Deptt

BY: Jitendra Kumar Singh, KIET-ME Deptt
2: Isometric projection
O The type of pictorial projection in
which all the projectors are parallel
but inclined at angle of 30 degree to
the plane of projection is known as
Isometric projection.

BY: Jitendra Kumar Singh, KIET-ME Deptt

3: Oblique projection
O The type of pictorial projection in
which one face of the object is
parallel to the plane of projection
and the adjacent face is inclined at
an angle of 45 degree to the plane of
projection is known as oblique
projection.

BY: Jitendra Kumar Singh, KIET-ME Deptt

Orthographic
projection
O The shadow or image of the object
obtained on plane of projection when
the projectors are parallel but
perpendicular to the plane of
projection known as orthographic
projection.

Difference between First and
Third angle projection
First angle Third angle
O Object situated in 1st angle. O Object situated in 3rd angle.
O Projection is obtained just O Projection is obtained in the
behind the object. same side of observer.
O Object remains in between O Projection remains in between
the projection and observer. the object and observer.
O Here H.P. remains below x-y O Here V.P. remains below x-y
and V.P. remains above the x- and H.P. remains above the x-
y line so plan is form below y line so plan is form above
the elevation. the elevation.
O Side view of any object is O Side view of any object is
formed in opposite side of the formed in the same side by
