STRATHCONA
S W E A T E R
The Strathcona is a bulky funnel necked sweater in a classic raglan style, with modern cropped
shaping and sleeves, that incorporates minimalist appeal.
SKILLS
Knit, purl, circular knitting, increasing, picking up stitches.

GAUGE
3.5 sts is 5 cm / 2” & 5 rows is 5 cm / 2” over stockinette on 19 US / 15 mm circulars

M AT E R I A L S
Super bulky wool, 5–6 wpi / approx 354 metres / 390 yards
13 US / 9 mm circulars, 16” / 41 cm around
15 US / 10 mm circulars, 24” / 61 cm around
19 US / 15 mm circulars, 24” / 61 cm around
Stitch markers, tapestry needle, waste yarn, measuring tape, row counter (optional).

MEASUREMENTS
(laying flat)
S/M, L/XL
53.5 cm / 21” (58.5 cm / 23”) across chest across chest
46 cm / 18” (51 cm / 20”) across ribbed waistband
46 cm / 18” (51 cm / 20”) in body length
30.5 cm /12” (35.5 cm / 14”) arm length from armpit

DIRECTIONS
Knitting top-down.
Ribbed mock neck
Using 13 US / 9 mm circulars, CO 40 (48) sts.
Use a long-tail CO method for stretch or use preferred CO method.

Join in the round, being careful not to twist sts, and place marker.
Row 1: *K1, P1* repeat.
Repeat Row 1 for 12 rows, measures approx 4.5” / 12 cm, or desired length.

Switch to larger needles, 19 US / 15 mm circulars.


Set up markers
K14 (16) (for front), PM, K6 (8) (for sleeve), PM, K14 (16) (for back), PM, K6 (8) (for sleeve), PM.
Optionally, use a different colour marker from the other markers to determine the beginning round.

Shape shoulders / increase sts.


Row 1: *K1, M1L, K to 1 st before marker, M1R, K1, SM* repeat (increases 8 sts).
Optionally try the backward loop method for M1.
Row 2: Knit.
Repeat rows 1 & 2 until you have increased st counts between markers as follows: 32 (34) sts for
body / 24 (26) sts for sleeve / 32 (34) sts for body / 24 (26) sts for sleeve.
Separate sleeves / continue to increase sts for shaping of front & back
Work sts (as in Row 1, continue to increase these sts) to marker, slip 24 (26) sts (for sleeve) onto
waste yarn for working later, work sts (as in Row 1, continue to increase these sts) to marker, slip 24
(26) sts (for sleeve) onto waste yarn.
Knit Row 2.

Customize
At this point, try on the sweater & make sure it fits comfortably. If not, continue to increase sts until de-
sired fit is achieved.

Work body
Continue to repeat Row 1 & Row 2, increasing sts until you have the following stitch counts between
markers: 40 (42) sts for front / 40 (42) sts for back.

Continue to knit until sweater measures approx 43.5 cm / 17” (48.5 cm / 19”) from top of shoulder,
or desired length.
Approx 10 rows or desired length.

Waist ribbing
Switch to 15 US / 10 mm circulars to begin ribbing.
Row 1: *K1, P1*, repeat.
Repeat Row 1 for 4 rows or desired.
BO in ribbing.

Pick up sts for sleeves


Transfer sts from the waste yarn onto 19 US / 15 mm circulars.
Pick up 5 sts at the armpit. K these 5 sts first, K around sleeve to last st, PM, then K last st together
with first st.
Optionally, leave the waste yarn in your work until the end, as a lifeline. Also as a easy visual guide to
measure and match sleeve lengths or count rows.

Knitting until the sleeve from pick up row measures 31 cm / 12” (35.5 cm / 14”), or desired length.
Approx 27 rows.,

Sleeve ribbing
Switch to 13 US / 9 mm circulars to begin ribbing.
Row 1: *K1, P1* repeat.
Repeat Row 1 for 4 rows or desired.
BO in ribbing.

Finishing
Seam in all remaining loose ends with tapestry needle.
