What I Need to Know
This module was developed to help you understand that the motion of an object
could be described and analyzed using motion graph. This will also help you practice
relevant skills to interpret motion graph by plotting points that show motion of a moving
object.

The module contains one lesson entitled “Visual Representation of Moving Objects”

After going through this module, you are expected to create and interpret visual
representation of the motion of objects such as tape charts and motion graph.
S7FE-IIIb-3
Specifically, you are expected to:
 determine the x and y axes of a motion graph;
 plot points that show motion of an accelerating object and object moving in a
constant speed on an xy graph;
 interpret an xy graph that shows the motion of an accelerating object and object
moving in constant speed; and
 create xy graphs based on a set of tabulated data and tape charts.

What I Know

Read each question carefully and encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. The object is in motion when there is a change in position over time with respect to a
reference point. Which of the following objects is in motion?
A. Rolling ball C. A picture frame on the wall
B. Parked car D. Glass of water on the table

2. If the speed of an object is 12m/s for 5 minutes, what can be inferred about the motion
of the object?
A. Accelerating C. Decelerating
B. Constant motion D. Insufficient Data

3. Which of the following DOES NOT describe an accelerating object?

A. The speed and direction are constant. C. There is a change in speed of an object.
B. There is a change in direction of an object. D. The speed is constant with changing
direction.

4. Mang Victor is driving his car and would like to cross the road when a cat suddenly
jumps on the road 5 meters before him. Describe the motion of Mang Victor’s car.
A. It is accelerating. C. Its speed is still constant.
B. It is decelerating. D. Its direction remains the same.

What Is It
Visual representation of a moving object is a handy tool in determining how
an object moves from a reference point. This representation is analysed and
interpreted using motion graph. The following are the visual representations of a
moving object and its interpretations.

Motion Graph (speed over time) Interpretation

 The object is in motion.
 The speed of the moving object is
V increasing.
 Since there is a change in speed, the
object is accelerating (positive
acceleration).
 The rate of acceleration is constant
because the motion graph is a diagonal
t straight line.
 The object is in motion.
 The speed of the moving object is
V constant. It is not changing over time.
 Since there is no change in speed, there
is no acceleration provided that there is
no change in direction.
 There will be acceleration if the direction
of the moving object changes even
t though its speed is constant.
 The object is in motion.
 The speed of the moving object is
V decreasing (negative acceleration).
 Since there is change in velocity, the
object is decelerating (negative
acceleration).
 The rate of acceleration is constant
because the motion graph is a diagonal
t
straight line.
 The motion graph tells that the object is
V constantly increasing its velocity in a
specific time.
 It doesn’t exist in reality. Objects move
relative to time.

V = speed
