Situation

You were instructed by Ms. De Vega, your

Science teacher, to write a report about the
effects of e-cigarettes on its users. You want to
use a reliable source of information as your
reference. You came across a vlog (video blog)
and interview clip that talk about e-cigarettes.

2

because the chemicals in it are… are…
well, not very strong compared to that of
traditional cigarettes.
Guys, this Rad Kidz e-cigarette is so lit,

and other severe respiratory diseases. They
also negatively affect the development of the
brain.

• GNA is a broadcasting station similar to GMA.
• The speaker in the video is Dr. Jo Gaza, a respected
pulmonologist from the Lung Center of the Philippines. He
has been a doctor for 25 years. He has also written 3 books
about pulmonary (lung) diseases.
• The interview was aired five months ago.

5
Compare and Contrast
Lesson Content of Materials Viewed
3 to Other Sources of
Information
(print, online, and broadcast)

Hello there!

With the huge volume of information present everywhere comes the challenge of
finding the ones that are accurate and trustworthy. Therefore, being able to compare
and contrast between or among materials is a skill that a learner like you must
develop. Making comparison and contrast shall help you become a good reader and
critical thinker. Moreover, this skill shall give you an advantage in doing more
complex tasks in the future.

What’s In

Hi, clever one!

In your previous grade levels, you learned how to compare and contrast things.
Finding the similarities between them is comparing. On the other hand, noting
their differences is contrasting.

Do you still remember the graphic organizer drawn on the next page? Yes, that’s
right! It is called the Venn Diagram. This organizer is often used to show comparison
and contrast. Either side shows the characteristics of the specific material presented
that are unique to each of them. The overlapping part of the circle, on the other
hand, shows the qualities common to both.

Let’s practice comparing and contrasting between things.

6
Direction: Using the Venn Diagram, compare and contrast the characteristics of the
two vehicles drawn below. Use the provided descriptions inside the gray
box.

jeepney
tricycle

• small • public utility vehicle

• colorful
• huge • has engine
• three-wheeled
• four-wheeled • staffed by a driver
• means of land
transportation • can be loaded
(with
people/cargo)

Do you still need help in using the Venn diagram?

Follow the instructions below.

1. Select the characteristics common to both the tricycle and jeepney.

Write them in the overlapping part (middle) of the two circles.
2. Write the characteristics unique to each vehicle in the part of the circle
directly above where its image is illustrated.

7
Notes to the Teacher
This module prepares the learners in comparing and contrasting
information viewed to other sources of information to ensure their
reliability.

What’s New

Unlocking Difficulties

Infer the meaning of each underlined word by using the sentence as a clue. Write
only the letter of the correct answer.

_____ 1. Overseas Filipino workers yearn to come back home to their families in the
Philippines. They must have been feeling homesick in a foreign land. To
yearn means __________.
a. to desire or want something
b. to believe in lies
c. to hate someone
_____ 2. This map was handy during my travel to Bagac, Bataan last year. I didn’t
get lost although I’m bad at directions. How can you describe the map? It
is ________________.
a. boring b. irritating c. useful
_____ 3. Mang Erning’s cows are grazing at the green, wide meadow. Where do his
cows graze?
a. field b. mountain c. street

8
_____ 4. Broadcasting stations should not present news with biases. Fairness and
honesty are needed to gain public trust. Bias means ________________.
a. superiority or power
b. truthfulness or accuracy
c. unfairness or one-sidedness
_____ 5. It’s a waste of time to pay attention to trivial matters. Do something
worthwhile although you’re on vacation. Trivial means ________________.

a. deep b. meaningful c. unimportant

You will find those underlined words in the poem that you are going to read. Are
you excited about it? Great!

Do you love learning about different things? What topics interest you the
most? Where do you find information about them? Read the poem below to
know more about information sources and what a learner like you must
consider in selecting one.

Got to Do Better

Here and there and all around,

Left and right, even on the ground,
Things to see, stuff to learn,
For information, we always yearn.

Students like you are very curious,

In processing thoughts, you are serious.
At home, in school, and in the community,
Whatever you learn, becomes so handy.

9
Information sources, as wide as a meadow,
There are several choices, I tell you so.
Article, journal, dictionary, and book,
Photograph, radio, your TV in the nook

Nowadays, it’s even made easier,

To gather data just by sitting there.
Websites, applications, and social media,
Almost everything is in Britannica.

Information galore, wonderful to explore,

Examine, analyze, then what’s more?
Judge, review, don’t take them up easily,
Scan for errors and biases diligently.

Compare the contents, are they reliable?

Are the details substantial, not just trivial?
Proofs we need in contrasting statements,
Are they for promotion or just entertainment?

For information might be right or wrong,

Agreeing easily and going along,
A big no-no, you must remember.
In selecting sources, you’ve got to do better.

10
Comprehension Check

1. According to the poem, where do you find information?

__________________________________________________________________________

2. What are the different information sources mentioned in the poem?

___________________________________________________________________________

3. What must you do with the vast information you come across with?

____________________________________________________________________________

4. Why should you not easily take-up or believe whatever information there is?

_____________________________________________________________________________

5. Do you select your information sources wisely? How?

______________________________________________________________________________

11
What is It

The world showers us with countless information. Learners like you have access to
them through various means. The poem you just have read enumerates some
sources of information.

What else can you add from those mentioned earlier?

Having access to various sources of information makes you more knowledgeable of

the world around you. Moreover, being well-informed turns you into a good decision-
maker and critical thinker.

However, you must bear in mind to check the reliability of your sources. Finding
reliable sources is extremely important for you to understand the whole truth about
a topic.1 When a source is reliable, it is trustworthy and not full of errors.

What would happen if you easily trust whatever material you come across with?
That’s right! You might fall for false or misleading information. So, remember to be
cautious at all times.

1Teaching Without Frills, “Writing Videos for Kids: How to Evaluate Sources for Reliability,” October
26, 2018, video, 3:48, https://youtu.be/q1k8rcYUmbQ.

12
A way to ensure the reliability of your information from various sources is by
comparing and contrasting them. Comparing is noting the similarities (or
differences, in some cases) between or among things. Contrasting, on the other
hand, is finding their differences.

Tip: Remember the acronym ADA in comparing and contrasting different

sources.

The YouTube channel Teaching Without Frills provides details that you must
examine when comparing or contrasting sources for their reliability.

1. Author (or publisher/content creator, etc.)

▪ It is important that an author is an expert on the topic.
▪ Try to learn about the author’s education and experience in the field.

2. Date of Publication
▪ In some cases, it is helpful to consider the date of publication of the
source.
▪ Some information about current events changes quickly so the recent
ones have the most up-to-date and accurate information.
▪ Scientific understandings can change over time, too. It is important to
be aware of the recent findings that may contradict previous conclusions.

3. Agenda (or purpose)

▪ The agenda is what the author or organization is trying to accomplish.
▪ You may ask yourself the following questions:
- Is the purpose of the material to inform or educate?
- Does the author want to persuade, entertain, or sell something?
(Seides 2018)

Let’s try to deepen your comprehension of the lesson with the next activities.

Are you ready?

13
