Information
(print, online, and broadcast)
Hello there!
With the huge volume of information present everywhere comes the challenge of
finding the ones that are accurate and trustworthy. Therefore, being able to compare
and contrast between or among materials is a skill that a learner like you must
develop. Making comparison and contrast shall help you become a good reader and
critical thinker. Moreover, this skill shall give you an advantage in doing more
complex tasks in the future.
What’s In
In your previous grade levels, you learned how to compare and contrast things.
Finding the similarities between them is comparing. On the other hand, noting
their differences is contrasting.
Do you still remember the graphic organizer drawn on the next page? Yes, that’s
right! It is called the Venn Diagram. This organizer is often used to show comparison
and contrast. Either side shows the characteristics of the specific material presented
that are unique to each of them. The overlapping part of the circle, on the other
hand, shows the qualities common to both.
6
Direction: Using the Venn Diagram, compare and contrast the characteristics of the
two vehicles drawn below. Use the provided descriptions inside the gray
box.

What is It
The world showers us with countless information. Learners like you have access to
them through various means. The poem you just have read enumerates some
sources of information.
However, you must bear in mind to check the reliability of your sources. Finding
reliable sources is extremely important for you to understand the whole truth about
a topic.1 When a source is reliable, it is trustworthy and not full of errors.
What would happen if you easily trust whatever material you come across with?
That’s right! You might fall for false or misleading information. So, remember to be

26, 2018, video, 3:48, https://youtu.be/q1k8rcYUmbQ.
12
A way to ensure the reliability of your information from various sources is by
comparing and contrasting them. Comparing is noting the similarities (or
differences, in some cases) between or among things. Contrasting, on the other
hand, is finding their differences.
The YouTube channel Teaching Without Frills provides details that you must
examine when comparing or contrasting sources for their reliability.
2. Date of Publication
▪ In some cases, it is helpful to consider the date of publication of the
source.
▪ Some information about current events changes quickly so the recent
ones have the most up-to-date and accurate information.
▪ Scientific understandings can change over time, too. It is important to
be aware of the recent findings that may contradict previous conclusions.
Let’s try to deepen your comprehension of the lesson with the next activities.
