INTRODUCTION
Nutrition begins with food. Nutrition is the process by which the body nourishes itself
by transforming food into energy and body tissues. The science of nutrition concerns
everything the body does with food to carry on its functions. Food provides essential
substances called nutrients. The body needs these nutrients to help it make energy; to grow,
repair, and maintain its tissues; and to keep its different systems working smoothly. Nutrition
is important for all organisms. However, this article will focus on nutrition as it applies to the
human body.
To find out the nutritional content of food, it is necessary to test it. Food tests include
starch (carbohydrate) tests, protein tests, sugar (glucose) tests, and fat tests.

EXPERIMENT
Food Material Test
PURPOSE
To analyze the nutritional content of food consumed daily

Tools and Materials:

1. Food ingredients: Wheat flour, cooking oil, syrup, and milk
2. Test tube
3. Test tube rack
4. Pipette
5. Bunsen Spiritus
6. Becker Glass
7. Test tube clamp
8. Lugol, Biuret, and Benedict reagents
9. Oil paper
WORK STEPS
Test for Starch – Indicator Reagen : Iodine Solution
 Add each food sample to a test tube until about 2cm. Add five drops of Lugol solution
to each food sample. Observe the color. (If it contains carbohydrates, the color
changes to blue-black)
Test for Protein – Indicator Reagen : Biuret Solution
 Add each food sample to a test tube until about 2cm. Add five drops of Biuret solution
to each food sample. Observe the color. (If it contains protein, the color changes to
purple)
Test for Sugar (Glucose) – Indicator Reagen : Benedict Solution
 Add each food sample to a test tube until about 2cm. Add five drops of Benedict
solution to each food sample, and place in a hot water bath. Wait for 5 minutes and
then observe the color. (If it contains glucose, the color changes to orange/brick red)
Test for Fat – Indicator : Oil Paper
 Add one drop of each food sample to an oil paper. Let stand for 1-2 minutes. Observe
the changes in the oil paper. Compare the changes in the oil paper for each food
sample. (If it contains fat, the oil paper turns transparent)

GROUP DISCUSSION

In the experiments that have been carried out, it is known that the carbohydrate
(starch), glucose (sugar), protein and fat tests have different indicators as follows:
1. In the carbohydrate test, the indicator used is ____________ solution. If the
food contains carbohydrates, it will change color to _____________.
2. In the sugar test, the indicator used is ____________ solution. If the food
contains glucose, after heating it will change color to _____________.
3. In the protein test, the indicator used is ____________ solution. If the food
contains protein, it will change color to _____________.
4. In the fat test, the indicator used is ____________. If the food contains fat, the
paper will turn into_________________
5. In the practical test, the food that contains carbohydrates is
_____________________________________________________________
6. In the practical test, the food that contains glucose is
_____________________________________________________________
7. In the practical test, the food that contains protein is
_____________________________________________________________
8. In the practical test, the food that contains protein is
_____________________________________________________________
