I. INTRODUCTION
1.What is English for Specific Purposes?
English for Specific Purposes - a specialized form of English language instruction
that focuses on teaching students how to use English in a specific field of study or
professional context.

2. How is English for Specific Purposes different from General English?


- English for specific purposes (ESP) is a subset of English as a second or foreign
language. It usually refers to teaching the English language to university students or
people already in employment, with reference to the particular vocabulary and skills
they need.
The Importance of ESP
ESP courses are important for a number of reasons:
1.They provide learners with the language skills needed to succeed in their chosen
field of study or profession.
2.ESP courses help learners to become more confident and proficient users of
English.
3.ESP courses are important for u universities and employers.

Relative Characteristics in ESP


In the context of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), the term “relative” can refer to
certain characteristics.
On the other hand, relative characteristics in ESP are specific to particular
professional fields or domains. These characteristics are related to the specialized
language and skills required in specific areas of expertise. For example, if you are
studying English for Medical Purposes, the relative characteristics may include
medical terminology, patient communication skills, and understanding medical
research articles.
Types of English for Specific Purposes
English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is an approach to English language teaching that
focuses on professional or academic contexts. It’s divided into two main types:
1. English for Occupational Purposes (EOP): This type is developed for
learners preparing for a specific job or work. It’s tailored to the vocabulary and skills
required in a particular profession.
2. English for Academic Purposes (EAP): This type is designed to help learners
improve their language proficiency to function better in an academic setting. It’s
often used by university students or those in higher education.

II. STANDARD ENGLISH: FORMAL AND INFORMAL


1. Formal Varieties-Formal language is characterized by the use of standard
English, more complex sentence structures, infrequent use of personal
pronouns, and lack of colloquial or slang terms.
Examples:
Formal written English, academic writing, legal language, technical jargon, and
diplomatic language.

2.Informal Varieties - allows the use of nonstandard English forms, colloquial


vocabulary and typically shorter sentence structures.
Examples:
Conversational language
Slang
Colloquial expressions
Informal writing
3.Informal words - words or expression that are commonly used in everyday
conversations, but are considered less formal than standard vocabulary and a
setting that is not formal.
Examples of informal writing include:
Comic books
Social media posts
Personal blogs
Text messages

Colloquial language- on the other hand, specifically refers to words and phrases
that are characteristic of or appropriate to ordinary or familiar conversation, often
specific to certain regions or social groups.

Slang- in English refers to informal words, phrases, and expressions that are often
specific to certain groups or communities. Slang is very informal language. We
usually use slang in speaking rather than writing.
