Cases of Non Standardized Testing

Dan Windmar, STRI

Background
• Standards not stringent enough
• Complex power systems yields
new challenges
• Development of new products
with new insulation media gives
rise to new phenomena
Transient tests
• Two different tests have
been performed during
the last year based on
different requirements
but simulating transients
in the power network
Transient test no 1
• Requirement was short rise time,
dc voltage for >1 s. Two different
tests performed
• DC transient on one side, other
side grounded
• DC transient on one side, DC
voltage on the other side
Transient test no 2
• 70 m busbar was built outdoor to which a circuit
breaker, capacitors and resistors where connected in
order to create a circuit with correct resonance
frequency
Ice, snow and low temperature testing
• There are some basic
standards on how to perform
tests under certain
environmental conditions like
e.g. ice. However, the clients
usually want to represent the
local conditions as far as
possible and this means going
outside any today existing
standard.
Ice tests
• Ice Progressive Stress
(IPS) test method
• Two phases, ice
deposition under
service voltage and
flashover performance
evaluation by increase
of test voltage up to
flashover.
Snow tests
• 4 steps
• Firstly the generation of the
snow with the specific
properties (conductivity, size of
snow particle etc)
• Secondly applying the snow to
the test object,
• Thirdly increase the water
content of the applied snow
• Voltage application
Low temperature tests in combination with voltage

• Impulse and AC testing has been

performed on medium voltage cables
and cable accessories for different
suppliers at -50C
Long term testing of high voltage equipment

• 22 months long term exposure to an AC voltage

superimposed on a DC voltage.
• Product designed for 245 kV and tested at an elevated
voltage
• Special circuit needed to be designed with rectifying circuit
and test transformer
• Leakage current and PD was also monitored
Rapid flashover
• The rapid flashover model
is based on the following
principle, applying
pollution on insulator
followed by application of
voltage. If the insulator
withstands the voltage
level the voltage is
increased to flashover at
the end of the test.
Impulse test after completing 1 year
prequalification of DC cable systems
• Test circuit needs to be
carefully designed
• Lightning/switching impulse
testing superimposed on DC
• Blocking capacitors as well
as water resistors needed to
protect the test equipment
Effects of electric and magnetic fields

• Of great concern for TSOs

• Local phenomena can occur depending
on e.g. climate and design of power line
• Very difficult to simulate in laboratory
Example of reported case
• People bicycling under power
has experienced electric
discharges between bicycle
and skin
• Testing in laboratory gave
reasonable explanation to the
cause of the problem
• Summer, dry, sag and clothes
Summary
• This report summarises some examples of different types of non
standardised testing that STRI has encountered throughout the years.
• The request for non standardised tests are coming from user specific
requirements (environment, system, etc) or the fact that the standards
are not up to date and need to be revised and adapted to more
stringent conditions.
• These types of tests put high requirements on the test equipment and
the competence of the test engineers. The test equipment needs to be
flexible and easy to move even though they are large and heavy and
require installations
