It is known that compound X decays at a different rate after the addition of a catalyst Y.
In this new model, the mass of compound X, m (in grams) present at time t (in hours) is
given by
200
m= ,
1 Bt
where B is a constant.
It is observed that in this new model, the mass of X reduces to 180 g after only 12 hours.
But after n days, a bigger mass of X remains when compared to the initial model where
Y was not added.
(e) Find the least integer value of n. [5]
7 Five couples bought 10 seats (in a row) for a soccer game for the weekend.
(a) Find the number of ways they can be seated if there are no restrictions. [1]
(b) Find the number of ways they can be seated if each couple is seated together with
the husband to the right of his wife. [2]
Unfortunately, one of the couples could not make it for the game.
(c) Find the number of ways the remaining 8 people can be seated amongst the 10
seats if there are no gaps between them, and each couple is seated together. [3]
8 In a large company, it was found that the proportion of employees who own a bicycle is
p, where 0 p 1.
(a) State, in context, an assumption needed for the number of employees who own a
bicycle to be well modelled by a binomial distribution. [1]
Assume now that the assumption stated in part (a) does in fact hold. A random sample
of 26 employees from the company is taken and the random variable X is the number of
employees in the sample who own a bicycle. It is given that P (X ≤ 3) = 0.61889.
(b) Find the value of p, giving your answer correct to 2 decimal places. [2]
(d) Find the probability that at least 3 of the 7 samples of 26 employees have at least
4 employees who own a bicycle. [3]

9 The average monthly temperature, x C, of a particular town and the monthly number of
ice cream cones sold, y, by an ice cream vendor in the town are given below:
x 16.4 18.1 22.6 25.1 23.4 22.1 19.4 17.2 14.2 11.9 15.2
y 652 856 989 1220 1080 1044 824 787 493 387 671
(a) Give a sketch of the scatter diagram for the data, as shown on your calculator. [2]
(b) Find the value of r, the product moment correlation coefficient, and comment on
its value in the context of the question. [2]
(c) Find the equation of the regression line of y on x, giving your answer in the form
y = m x c, with the values of m and c correct to 3 significant figures. Sketch this
line on your scatter diagram. [2]
(d) The average temperature for a certain month is 21.2 C. Use your regression line
in part (c) to calculate an estimate of the number of ice cream cones sold by the
vendor for that month. Comment on the reliability of your estimate. [3]
10 In a carnival game, a player draws a ball randomly from a box. The box contains 41
black balls and 9 white balls.
If the player draws a black ball, he will flip a fair coin. If the coin shows head, the
player’s final score will be 2. If the coin shows tail, the player’s final score will be 1.
If the player draws a white ball, he will flip two fair coins. If both coins show head, the
player’s final score will be 2. If both coins show tail, the player’s final score will be 1.
Otherwise, the player's final score will be 0.
(a) The tree diagram below shows all the possible outcomes when the player draws a
black ball. Complete the tree diagram to show all the possible outcomes when the
player draws a white ball. [2]

(b) Find the probability that the player’s final score is 0. [1]
(c) Find the probability that a white ball is drawn or the player’s final score is 1, but
not both. [3]
(d) Given that the player’s final score is 2, find the probability that he drew a black
ball. [3]
11 Whole salmon fish sold in a particular stall in the market can either be farm-raised or
wild-caught. The mass, in kg, of a wild-caught salmon from the stall is a random
variable with the distribution N (4.50, 0.652).
(a) Find the probability that a randomly chosen wild-caught salmon from the stall has
mass greater than 5 kg. [2]
The mass, in kg, of a farm-raised salmon from the stall is a random variable with the
distribution N (5.50, 0.552).
(b) One wild-caught salmon and one farm-raised salmon are chosen at random from
the stall. Find the probability that their total mass is more than 10.5 kg. [2]
7 wild-caught salmon and 8 farm-raised salmon are chosen at random from the stall.
(c) Find the probability that the total mass of the 7 wild-caught salmon differs from
the total mass of the 8 farm-raised salmon by not more than 10 kg. [4]
The wild-caught salmon are sold at $35 per kg while the farm-raised salmon are sold at
$25 per kg.
(d) Find the probability that the total cost of the 8 farm-raised salmon is more than
the total cost of the 7 wild-caught salmon by at most $26. [4]
12 A manufacturer of bottled fruit juices uses machines to dispense the fruit juices into
bottles that move along a filling line. The machine that dispenses the orange juice is
working properly if 250 ml is dispensed into each bottle. To check whether the
machine is working properly, a random sample of 65 bottles of orange juice is chosen.
The amount of orange juice in each bottle, x ml, are summarised as follows.
(a) Find unbiased estimates of the population mean and variance, giving your answer
correct to 5 significant figures. [3]
(b) Determine the conclusion the manufacturer should reach if the test is carried out
at the 5% level of significance. [5]
The manufacturer has a second machine that dispenses apple juice into slightly smaller
bottles. In this case, the machine is considered as working properly if 245 ml of juice is
dispensed into each bottle. It is known that the population variance of the amount of
juice dispensed by this machine is 144 ml2.
A test at the 5% level, carried out on a sample of 65 bottles of apple juice, gives
insufficient evidence that the population mean of the amount of apple juice in each
bottle differs from 245 ml.
(c) Find the set of values within which the mean amount of apple juice in each bottle
of this sample, m, must lie. Leave your answer correct to 1 decimal place. [4]
