Chapter 1

Introduction

1.1Chapter Overview

The preceding chapter presents the best available visual research and knowledge, the

researcher has collected regarding the physics of movement of rides in an amusement park. It

encompasses necessary introduction that incorporates the fundamentals and reasoning behind the

study. In this chapter the reader will acknowledge the basic theme and inspiration behind the

entire research. It describes the study in details with regard to the background. From the primary

knowledge to gap fulfillment, this chapter aims to specify the overall objectives that defines the

importance of the study.

1.2 Background

The fashion industry is benefiting greatly from 3D printing, which includes everything

from 3D printed clothes to 3D printed footwear and accessories. Originally, 3D printing was

used for artistic purposes, but the fashion industry is now developing 3D printed projects of

wearable garments. It uses computer-aided design to precisely build an item layer by layer.

Plastics and metal powders were initially used as feedstock for the process, but resins, carbon

fibers, and even graphite and graphene are now widely used.
2

The technique has many perks over traditional manufacturing methods: it permits rapid

prototyping, increased efficiency, and the production of one-of-a-kind items. It can also reduce

production costs and carbon dioxide emissions from the process, as well as reduce energy

consumption over a product's lifecycle. The majority of the design process is done on computer

system, and with better computer simulations, it is possible to recognize where parts can be

changed for the better. It is also possible to detect where they might fail, resulting in fewer

prototypes and less wastages.

New factors are now being considered, and the reasons why designers choose 3D printing are

changing: it is becoming increasingly important to use 3D printing for sustainable and eco-

friendly purposes. Sustainability is revolution and a great development opportunity today. But

have the Pakistan's fashion industry contemplated the idea of using 3D printing in sustainable

garments, textiles and materials?

While there has been a smattering of local apparel businesses that have incorporated certain

elements of sustainability into their business practices, Pakistan’s fashion still has more steps to

take, before the fashion industry endeavors to adapt eco-friendly, fair and ethical practices.

Furthermore, the idea of sustainability has managed to gain a lot attention but the end products

aren't that catchy to every eye i.e. it doesn’t have to be always green to be sustainable. T

he topic “Too Haute to Ride" focuses on 3D materials and their durability, useability and

functionality. Inspired from movement of rides in an amusement park the visuals are generated.

The researcher is inspired because she takes huge interest in studying motion and technicalities

of machines and their spare parts. She connects with the topic through a personal story of hers.
3

It is from when the researcher went to “Joyland”, an amusement park in Lahore. She decided to

experience discovery ride the one with a pendulum like structure but has a 360° rotation, along

with her sister. The ride almost started while they were not perfectly belted to the outward-

facing suspended seats, while the starting siren hooted. It was a chaotic moment the called out

for assistance, when out of nowhere the guard and the ride operator began to argue. Meanwhile,

all this chaos they were stuck half belted to the discovery ride. But later people came for help

and unbelted and removed her sister. Meanwhile the researcher decided to continue the ride.

Basically, riders on this ultimate thrill ride sit in the seats that form a giant circle of about 40

passengers; their legs dangle freely in the air, and each seat has an individual automatic shoulder

restraint and a manual restraining belt. Giant Discovery swings the riders back and forth in a

seemingly out-of-control pendulum motion while rotating counterclockwise. At the peak the

swing stops for a while and the riders are hanging upside down and experience an airtime that

coveted feeling of weightlessness that is popular for thrill-seekers on the roller coasters.

1.3 Purpose of the study

The purpose of study is to visually explore the movement of the rides in an amusement

park. The visuals will be collected through photography that can be then used to create textiles

and silhouettes out of them. This is inspired from the idea of using 3D textiles to promote their

usage as sustainable textiles in Pakistan. The researcher wanted to research further possibilities

to use 3D textiles that can be used multiple ways. In addition, the project focuses to hunt down

the elements from the research that can further be used in production. Furthermore, the study is
4

to incorporate that movement into garments through multiple possibilities in textiles and

silhouettes of the garment in order to give and create different shapes closer to the body. The

results of this will contribute to the future of 3D printing and its awareness in Pakistan.

The most significant advantage of 3D printing is that it can save a significant amount of fuel. A

product is frequently transported several times during the normal mass production process.

Typically, the product is manufactured in another country by a manufacturing company. It is

finally delivered to the stores after being transferred to a local packaging company. Because the

product is transported multiple times, a large amount of exhaust gases are released. The entire

product, including packaging, can be manufactured locally using a 3D printer. In preparation for

production, the product can even be designed in one country and emailed (design file) to another.

As a result, it is not necessary to transport the item multiple times.

1.4 Problem statement

Manufacturing in the future will most likely be a hybrid of traditional methods and 3D

printing. The latter is more resource-efficient and allows more efficient and novel designs, which

contribute to lower manufacturing requirements. It is also greener, cleaner, and more sustainable

than traditional manufacturing techniques; however, there is still room for improvement. The

idea of 3D textiles in garments is sustainable as well and can have greater attention.

1.5 Research questions

Following are the research questions

5

● How can 3D surfaces be attached to the garments i.e attachment and connectivity

possibilities.

● What are the possible shapes and forms a 3D surface can take on the body?

● What other fabrics and materials that can assist 3D printing?

1.6 Research objectives

Following are the research objectives

● To experiment and create the possibilities and design 3D textiles inspired garments.

● To design the shape and components of the roller coaster in the form of garments

● To experiment with the rides from amusement parks and use them to create experimental

silhouettes.

1.7 Significance of the study

The primary beneficiaries of the study are the fashion industry because sustainability

is future and it is important to dig into possible ways to introduce it. This study is answer to the

need of using 3d textiles and promoting sustainability. It provides research-based information

that can help to reach attainable technicality and creativity in producing garments that are

experimental. Through this research, people will further realize importance of sustainability and

effectiveness of promoting the use of 3D printed textiles.

All of the preceding highlights that 3D printing is more sustainable than anything else. The

reader can confidently assert that 3D printing technology has environmental benefits. Exhaust

emissions can be reduced, less energy is used, repairs rather than replacements, less waste, and

the ability to make products from more environmentally friendly materials, as well as the ability
6

to recycle any waste. 3D technology will continue to advance and will eventually supplant

traditional methods

1.8 Summary.

The chapter outlines the problem statement, research objectives and purpose of

study to reflect the concept of how, why, what will be the driving force in the study.

Furthermore, it basically is to inform the reader about the boundaries of the study, therefore

creating direction to final product.
