BRIEF _ STEELWORK DESIGN COURSEWORK

You are to carry out the structural design of a four storey teaching block at NTU’s Brackenhurst
campus. This project brief document is to be accompanied by the issued drawings.

The building has been designed to achieve BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating. This will involve a
selection of sustainable building materials and a consideration of diverse issues around the life
cycle impacts across the environmental, social and economic aspects of sustainability. The
building has 60 minutes fire resistance and life safety sprinklers as part of the structural fire
resistance requirements.

Structural System

Feasibility proposals have suggested the use of a structural steel frame. The structure measures
34m by 18m on plan. Floor Heights (Slab to Slab, measured from the structural slab level) is 3m.

All structural steel members are to be grade S355; all fittings are to be grade S275 and all joints
are to be simple (conform to the requirements of “Simple Constructions”).

The steel columns are erected from ground floor to level 2 and from level 2 to roof level (in other
words, they are spliced at level 2). They conform to the requirements of “Simple Construction” of EC3.

External Cladding

The external vertical cladding system to the steelwork frame will be comprised of distinct systems:

-100mm P.C.C (precast concrete cladding with insulation and dry lining system) panels 1.5m
high, with a 1.5m deep glazing band (triple glazing units in an aluminium framing system) above
this at each storey level, along gridlines A2-A5 and D2-D4. The characteristic values of self-
weight for P.C.C and glazing are 3.0kN/m2 and 0.45kN/m2 respectively.

- Galss curtain wall system (triple glazed units) are provided to bays 1B-1C, 6A-6B, 5B-5D and
B5-B6. The characteristic value of self-weight of the glass curtain walls is 2.0kN/m2 on elevation.

-Cavity walls are provided to bays A1-A2, A5-A6, D1-D2, D4-D5, 1A-1B and 1C-1D.The walls
comprise a 102.5mm thick brickwork as an external leaf, a 75mm insulated cavity and a 140mm
lightweight blockwork with a plaster finish. The inner leaf sits on the floor slab while the outer
leaf is supported by a proprietary support system at each floor level. The characteristic value of
self-weight of the cavity wall is 4.20kN/m2 on elevation.

-The roof comprises lightweight insulated panels supported on cold rolled steel purlins and its
weight is to be taken as 0.3kN/m2. The allowance for steelwork self-weight at roof level is 0.3kN/m2.
The roof system spans over 6m.

Stability System

The structure has cross diagonal braces in both orthogonal directions. Bays A1-A2, D1-D2, D4-D5,
1A-1B and 1C-1D contain the vertical bracing (tension cross bracing) that provides stability to
the complete structure. It comprises two 120mm wide by 10mm thick steel flats in each bay.
For initial design purposes, the bracing dead load can be ignored.

Internal Fit Out

-The flooring system is to be concrete hollow-core units of 150mm thick has a self-weight of
3.10kN/m2 and the infill (finishes) to create a continuous level finished surface has a self weight
of 2.1kN/m2. An additional superimposed dead load of 0.5kN/m 2 is to be provided to the
suspended floors to accommodate a raised flooring system. All the precast concrete hollowcore
flooring units span over 6m.

4
-All internal partitions are to be in 100mm thick and normal density concrete blockwork with a
plaster finish to both sides. The positions of the partitions on plan have yet to be decided.
The partitions weight allowance is to be taken as 1.0kN/m2.

-The layout of the floors is assumed known, and the structural frame plans are shown on the brief’s
drawings (schematic guidance only).

-A service and ceiling allowance (permenant action) of 0.5kN/m2 is to be acceptable at roof and floor levels.

-The allowance for steelwork self-weight at floor level is to be taken as 0.6kN/m2.

Usage

-The 1st Floor level is to be intended for office usage and the rest of floors (level 2 and level 3)
are to be for teaching and conferences purposes. The variable action for all floors are to be
defined in kN/m2. The ground floor is to be designed independently afterwards (not as part of
this project, not included in this assignement).

-At roof level, the variable action for the inaccesble usage is to be defined in kN/m 2.

Submission: Design calculation of beams and columns

-You are to work in a team (self-selected from your seminar group) to complete the design of
the critical elements in structural steelwork. All structural elements are to be designed for
gravity loads only and should conform to the values of loading defined by the group in their
loading schedule. All designs are to be in accordance with the relevant Eurocodes.

-Remember that optimising steelwork beams and columns involves designing them to be
economical while still meeting safety requirements. This can be achieved by using the
sections efficiently and reducing weight and cost.

The critical structural design submission and support are as follow:

• Week 27
• Project-support sessions are timetabled in term 1.
• Students can ask for support at the end of the teaching sessions if the time allows it.

1. Loading schedule

From the provided information in this brief document, you are required to produce the loading
schedule for the roof and floors.

2. Calculation plan and Design of beams & columns

You have to identify which structural elements you need to design. Remember that
standardisation will reduce costs. You will need to look at the drawings that you have been issued
and determine which structural elements (i.e. columns and beams) you will need to produce
calculations for. As well as defining the structural members, you should identify which member
of the team who is to be responsible for producing the calculations for that particular element.

Each member of the team should design 2 UKB (1 restrained and 1 unrestrained) and 1 UKC
(at roof level or at ground floor level).

3. Assignment presentation

Read the instructions carefully and make sure you understand the assignment questions and
how they should be answered and presented. In addition, a well-presented written work is crucial
as your assignment include marks for presentation. Your assignment must be typed and not
handwritten.
