Eco-Anxiety
It’s normal for teenagers to worry, at least a little, about their future. For example, a lot of teens are concerned
about getting into university or finding a good job. However, these days, some may feel the weight of the world
on their shoulders. The younger generation of today cares more about the environment than any previous
generation, so some of them may be very worried about the future of the planet, and what they can do about it.
Doctors do not consider it a medical condition, but a lot of experts call this ‘eco-anxiety’.

Teens and young adults develop eco-anxiety from learning about the facts of global warming – and we can’t tell
them that there’s nothing to worry about. Most scientists agree that global warming is caused by carbon
emissions, but our carbon footprint remains very large. In fact, some scientists predict that by 2030 carbon
emissions will increase by 16%. If this happens, global temperatures will continue to rise.

What makes teens’ eco-anxiety worse, though, is the feeling that they can’t do much about the problem. Because
of their age, teens can’t vote for governments or become politicians, so they can’t make laws to help the
environment. This may some teens feel powerless and depressed. Watching the news and reading about extreme
weather or endangered species only makes them feel worse.
So how can we help teens deal with eco-anxiety? Well, they need to realise that they can play an active role in
solving the problem by making eco-friendly changes in their daily life. Obviously, we also need to give teens
some hope for the future, so everyone needs to get serious about global warming. Finally, we need to give teens a
voice and listen to them respectfully so that they feel less powerless about the situation. After all, the leaders of
tomorrow’s world deserve to have a voice today.

36. What is the main idea of the second paragraph?

A. It is understandable for teens to have eco-anxiety.
B. Teens don’t know the truth about global warming.
C. It doesn’t make sense for teens to have eco-anxiety.
D. It's mostly teens that are interested in global warming.

37. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Eco-anxiety is a condition that only affects teenagers.
B. Eco-anxiety is the medical word for stress about the environment.
C. Younger generations worry more about the environment than ever before.
D. Teens care more about the environment than personal issues.

38. Why does the author mention age in the third paragraph?
A. to say why teens feel a lot of anxiety in general
B. to say why teens can’t get involved in politics
C. to say why teens can't make enough eco-friendly choices
D. to say why teens don’t understand the effects of global warming

39. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A. Teens aren’t very interested in politics nowadays.
B. Teens think they know more about global warming than they really do.
C. Teens don't depend on the older generation to solve global warming.
D. Teens need to recognise the symptoms of eco-anxiety and deal with them.
40. Which phrase is closest in meaning to ‘feel the weight of the world on their shoulders’ in the first
paragraph?
A. feel responsible for something
B. feel powerless about something
C. feel unable to deal with something
D. feel depressed about something

C. Read the following passage. For each of the questions from 41 to 45, write T if the statement is TRUE and F
if the statement is FALSE.

Bagan

Located in the Mandalay region, close to the Irrawaddy River, Bagan is an ancient city and UNESCO World
Heritage Site in Myanmar. The flat land around Bagan, called the Bagan plains, is famous for its huge number of
Buddhist temples, monasteries and stupas, which are places for meditation.
The history of Bagan goes back to the 9 th century when the city became the capital of the Bagan Kingdom. This
kingdom was the first to bring all of the regions of Myanmar together. Religion was very important to the Bagan
Kingdom, so for the next 250 years, its rulers built over 10,000 religious monuments in a small area on the Bagan
plains, only around 100 square kilometres in size.
The Bagan Kingdom ended in the late 13 th century and most of its religious monuments no longer exist.
Earthquakes destroyed lots of them, while others simply became ruins over time. Nevertheless, around 2,200
monuments remain today – and many are still in use. One of these is Ananda Temple, which is famous for its four
statues of Buddha, each facing a different direction. Also, another monument worth visiting is the Shwesandaw
Pagoda. Visitors can climb its steps and get a great view of the plains below.
Visitors can use various forms of transport to explore Bagan. However, no visit to the area is complete without a
trip in a hot-air balloon. Almost every day, you can see hot-air balloons in the skies over the Bagan plains. They
give visitors a chance to see hundreds of religious monuments from above in one unforgettable trip – and a lot of
them come with local foods to try, too!

41. The area around Bagan has a lot of mountains. _____

42. At one time, the Bagan Kingdom ruled all of Myanmar. _____
43. Natural disasters destroyed a lot of Bagan’s monuments. _____
44. People still enter the Ananda Temple for religious reasons. _____
45. Tourists can only go on hot-air balloon trips at certain times of the year. _____

in each of the gaps.
Rewilding

Why necessary: harmful human actions like (52) ___________________ deforestation and hunting
What species rewilding involves: animals as well as (53) ___________________; letting ecosystems return to
their natural state
Other benefits: could help against the negative impacts of (54) ___________________ such as wildfires
Where rewilding projects are currently taking place: in more than (55) ___________________ worldwide

Audioscript
Just as the name suggests, the project of Rewilding is a way of protecting wildlife by getting species back into the
natural habitats where they have disappeared, back into the wild. In the USA, there are wolves once again in
Yellowstone National Park, a few thousand European Bison are now living happily in the Netherlands, and there
are plans to rewild the Sumatran Tiger in parts of Central Asia.
It’s a sad fact that endangered species are in danger because of harmful human actions like deforestation or
hunting. We have changed lots of kinds of ecosystems, endangering lots of species. At least now, we can start to
put things right by rewilding.
Rewilding is not only about animals, but it’s also about plants. Some programmes are planting trees and then
letting nature take over, leaving areas of the countryside or jungle to grow back into their original condition, just
like it was before humans came along and cut everything down.
Experts have also said that rewilding can have a wider effect on ecosystems by reducing the effects of climate
change. Take wildfires for example. Dry plants and leaves can make wildfires worse and help them spread over
huge distances. There are some species that eat those plants and leaves. Rewild them and there could be fewer
wildfires.
These kinds of projects are happening in over 70 countries around the world and they need all our support. We’ve
done enough damage to so many species. Let’s put wild animals back where they belong – in the wild.
