ETN3046: Analog and Digital Communications

Tutorial 5: Baseband Data Transmission and Digital Modulation

Techniques

1. In a baseband transmission system, a line coder (pulse modulator) produces a rectangular

pulse of +1 V in response to a binary 1, and a –1 V pulse for a binary 0. This line code
waveform is then transmitted through a channel. Given the binary signal of 0 0 1 1 0 1 0 0 1 at
the line coder input, sketch the corresponding signal at the receiver filter output for ideal Nyquist
filtering (system time response p(t) = sinc(t/Tb) = sinc(2Wt), where Tb is the bit duration of
the input binary data and W = 1/(2Tb) ).

2. A computer has an output bit rate of 56 kbits/s, and three successive binary digits are
coded into one of eight possible amplitude levels. The resulting eight-level pulses are then
shaped using raised cosine filtering during transmission over a baseband channel. Find the
transmission bandwidths for the following roll-off factors: α = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.

3. An analogue source is sampled, quantised, and encoded into a binary PCM signal. Each
quantised sample is encoded into a codeword, which is then line coded into three
information pulses plus a synchronising pulse. The line code pulses can take on four
possible levels, and are transmitted over a channel of bandwidth 6 kHz using Nyquist
filtering with 50% roll-off.
(a) Determine the symbol rate of the line code pulses.
(b) Find the information bit rate of the PCM signal.
(c) It is desired to trade the number of quantisation levels for source bandwidth. If the
number of quantisation levels is reduced by a factor of 4, what is the new source
bandwidth? Assume Nyquist sampling rate is used.

4. A 4,800 bits/s data terminal is connected to a modem. Calculate the transmission

bandwidth required at the modem output for each of the following schemes. 50% roll-off
shaping is used in all cases.
(a) Binary ASK.
(b) Binary FSK. Assume that the frequency deviates ±3,600 Hz about the carrier.
(c) 16-state QAM.

5. A 1,200 bits/s bit stream is encoded to a two-level line code signal. The line code is
transmitted through a baseband communication system, which implements a sinusoidal
roll-off shaping. The shaped line code is then FSK modulated before transmitted over a
telephone channel. The FSK signal is to fit into the frequency range of 500 to 2,900 Hz of
the telephone channel. The carrier is modulated to two frequencies of 1,200 and 2,200 Hz.
Determine the bandwidth and roll-off factor of the baseband transmission system.

6. A 9,600 bits/s transmission over a telephone line is desired. For this purpose the line must
be specially conditioned to allow signal transmission over the frequency range of 300 to
3,000 Hz. Show that 16-state QAM, with 12.5% sinusoidal roll-off shaping, will provide
the desirable bit rate.
