Topic: La familia
Sub-topic: Family tree.
Objectives : Students will describe family relationships using a family tree in Spanish.
Concept: definite article, possession, sentence structure.

Read the following sentences:

Esta es mi prima, Silvia. Es la hija de mi tía Paloma.


(This is my cousin, Silvia. She is the daughter of my aunt Paloma.)

★ No apostrophe is required in Spanish.

My aunt’s daughter would be translated to the daughter of my aunt.

Example:
1. El hijo de Silvia- The son of Silvia (Silvia’s son)
2. La hija de silvia- The daughter of Silvia (Silvia’s daughter)
3. Pedro es el nieto de Juan- Pedro is the grandson of Juan (Pedro is Juan 's grandson).
4. Paloma es la esposa de Ronaldo- Paloma is the wife of Ronaldo (Paloma is Ronaldo’s wife)
5. La familia de Antonio- Thefamilyof Antonio ( Antonio’sfamily)

Remember: el/la are the definite articles for “the” in Spanish. ‘De’ is translated to of/from.

★ Gender and number of nouns

A.
1. You add ‘s’ to nouns that end in a vowel to form the plural form.
El hombre (the man) → los hombres (the men)
La hermana (the sister) → lashermanas (the sisters)
2. Nouns that end in a consonant add -es
La mujer (the woman) → lasmujeres (the women)

B. The articles el/la changes to los/las.


Es (he/she/it is) changes to son (they are).

C. The plural form of the masculine noun is used to denote masculine and feminine.
Padre (father) → padres (parents)
Abuelo (grandfather) →abuelos (grandparents)
Primo (male cousin) →primos (cousins)
