EXPERIMENT 2 Relative Viscosity
EXPERIMENT 2 Relative Viscosity
2 Date:
VISCOSITY
OBJECT: To determine relative viscosity of given samples (glycerine) by Ostwald viscometer.
REQUIREMENTS:
APPARATUS: REAGENTS:
Ostwald viscometer RD Bottle
Weighing Balance Water
Beaker 10% glycerin solution
THEORY:
DEFINITION OF VISCOSITY:
Viscosity is defined as the internal resistance of sample to flow. It is the internal friction of sample. The
unit of viscosity is poise.
OSTWALD VISCOMETER
FORMULA:
PROCEDURE:
1. Take tap water in Ostwald U tube viscometer and make sure that the water level is exact at the mark.
2. Suck the water from mark A side above the level of mark A. place the thumb on it.
3. Allow the water to flow by putting off the thumb.
4. Start the stop watch when the water mark reaches the mark A.
5. Stop the stop watch till the water reaches the mark B by passing the bulk.
6. Note down the time of flow of water from mark A to mark B. Repeat the same procedure thrice and
calculate the average time of flow.
7. Repeat the same procedure for glycerin. Taking three observations.
8. Measure the density of each liquid by using RD bottle and calculate it with the formula.
9. Now calculate the viscosity of given solution with the help of density.
OBSERVATION:
Viscosity of water is 0.0089 poise
