Little Bighorn

A Novel
By John Hough
The Battle of Little Bighorn holds a significant
place in American history due to its impact on the
relationship between Allen Winslow and Addie
Grace Lord. In the midst of impending conflict with
the Sioux and Cheyenne, Allen and Addie Grace
meet and form a deep connection. However, their
love story is tested by the challenges posed by
their circumstances.

As Allen becomes involved in Custer's campaign

against the Native American tribes, he faces not
only physical dangers but also emotional turmoil.
The impending battle places strain on his
relationship with Addie Grace, as they both
grapple with fear for his safety and uncertainty
about their future together. The historical events
surrounding them serve as a backdrop for their
love story, highlighting the sacrifices made during
times of war.

The Battle of Little Bighorn itself was a turning

point in history. It was caused by tensions between
settlers encroaching upon Native American lands
and resistance from indigenous tribes fighting to
protect their way of life. General Custer's ill-fated
decision to engage in battle directly impacted
Allen, Addie Grace, and other characters in this
story.

The outcome of the battle was disastrous for

Custer’s forces, resulting in heavy casualties
including Custer himself. This devastating loss had
profound ramifications for Allen and Addie Grace's
relationship. The grief experienced by survivors
further strained their bond as they navigated
through the aftermath of such a tragic event.

In conclusion, the relationship between Allen

Winslow and Addie Grace Lord is deeply
intertwined with both personal emotions and
historical events leading up to and following the
Battle of Little Bighorn. Their love story highlights
not only individual sacrifices but also larger
themes related to war, loss, and resilience. Despite
facing immense challenges posed by these
circumstances, they find solace in each other
amidst an uncertain world shaped by conflicts that
defined an era.

Why I chose this book Beautifully written and

filled with unforgettable characters, Little Bighorn
brings to life the American West and its
heartbreaking history, brilliantly portraying the
flawed and tormented Custer. Well researched.
Well written. A tragic tale. A poignant ending.
Hough's book is well researched. It gives a good
sense of events. The love story between Allen and
his girlfriend, sister of a regimental surgeon, gives
one way (their letters) to get a narrative account
of the campaign. John Hough's Little Bighorn is
great entertainment and a fresh look at the
infamous battle at Little Bighorn. It's well known
that there were no survivors at Custer's part of the
battlefield. Allen Winslow and his blithe
companions are an engaging lot, and it's sad to
know that they are riding to their doom. However,
Allen is a fictional character, so can he survive
somehow to return to his beloved Addie? Read
Little Bighorn to satisfy that bit of suspense, for a
breathtaking description of Custer's final hours, or
as a fine piece of historical fiction. Little Bighorn is
a potent blend of research and imagination. John
Hough has forever changed my view of George
Armstrong Custer in this stellar, riveting novel.

What is the specific genre and the author’s

purpose? - western and historical fiction,a
masterwork of the ultimate triumph of love and
redemption during the so-called 'Indian Wars in
LITTLE BIGHORN he’s turned his superb
storytelling talents to the epic story of Custer and
the Little Bighorn. I read the last hundred pages in
one page-turning and finger-burning frenzy, then
put the book down and reluctantly returned to our
modern world, sorry there wasn’t more to read.

What is my purpose for reading it?- LITTLE

BIGHORN is a fine novel drawing on both fictional
and historical figures. I have always loved Custer
and the Little Bighorn this book just called to me
as one of the best there is out there. Great Story
from begin to end.
