TUTORIALS

A FRONT LOOP,
BACK LOOP, BACK BUMP 01 02
front loop back loop
Sometimes you need to work into just
one part of a stitch. This might be a front
loop or the back loop (→ Photo 01).

Some instructions also call for working

into the back bumps on the backside of a back bump
foundation chain (→ Photo 02).

B INVISIBLE SC-DECREASE
01 02
Insert hook into the front loop of the
1st stitch and then directly also into the
front loop of the 2nd stitch (3 loops on
the hook → Photo 01)

Single crochet as usual: Yarn over (yo),

draw yarn through both front loops on
the hook (2 loops on the hook). Yo, draw
yarn through both loops on the hook.

C CHANGING YARN
01 02
Change to another color by joining in the
new color during the final step of the last
stitch in the old color as follows:

Work the last stitch in the old color until

the last two loops of the stitch are on the
hook. Then pull a loop of the new color
through the 2 remaining old colored
loops on your hook (→ Photo 01). The
next stitch you make will be the first
stitch in the new color (→ Photo 02).

D JOIN YARN WITH A SLIP KNOT

01
Make a slip knot (do not place it on the hook). Insert the hook into indicated stitch.
Place the slip knot onto hook and pull the slip knot through the stitch (→ Photo 01).

Take care to keep the knot on the back of the fabric. Work into the next stitch, or make the
number of chain stitches as indicated in the pattern (e.g., to start a new round).

You can also just insert the hook into indicated stitch, yo and pull it through the stitch if
you prefer (without making a slip knot).

3
E STANDING STITCH JOIN
With a slip knot onto hook insert the hook into indicated stitch. Yarn over, draw the yarn through the stitch (→ Photo 01).
Yarn over, pull through both loops on the hook (→ Photo 02), finish a single crochet stitch as usual (→ Photo 03).

01 02 03

F INVISIBLE FASTEN OFF

Skip one stitch. Insert needle into next stitch, pull yarn through. Insert needle into the back loop of the same stitch that the yarn tail
is coming from (→ Photos 01+02). Pull gently. This creates a false stitch (closing stitch) that mimics the skipped stitch (→ Photo 03).

01 02 03
skip 1

G CLOSE REMAINING STITCHES THROUGH THE FRONT LOOPS

Pull the yarn tail through last stitch completely. With a yarn needle, draw the yarn through every remaining front loop - from outside to
inside (→ Photo 01). Pull gently to close the gap (→ Photo 02+03).

GENERAL ADVICE

1. For most parts you start with an adjustable ring („magic ring“ or „magic loop“) and you’ll go on work in a
continuous spiral (except the pattern calls for a slst to close the round). This means, you continue to crochet
directly into the first stitch of the previous round to start the next round.

2. You should mark the first stitch of a round to keep track of where the round begins. This helps when counting

your stitches to compare it with the pattern.

3. Take care to crochet very tight stitches! If you crochet rather loosely, choose a smaller hook size.

4. To get the right shape for your amigurumi, the most important thing is to stuff it very well. Stuff it as tight as

you can – I mean, really tight! If you think that’s enough, stuff it a bit more! A broken chop stick is the perfect
tool to help spreading the soft stuffing into every little corner.

5. If you make the toy for a child under the age of 3, please use safety eyes or embroider the eyes with dark grey

yarn and do it without small details, like sequins or beads, which can be swallowed. Make sure every part is
tightly sewn on to securely attach all pieces to the body.

6. Most important: Have fun!

ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS)
…blo = work stitch as indicated through back loop only, example: sc-blo, dec-blo
bob = bobble stitch out of 2 dc stitches worked into the same stitch (→ Tutorial below)
ch = chain stitch
chsp = chain space
dec = decrease (crochet together 2 sts with 1 sc)
dc = double crochet stitch
hdc = half double crochet stitch
inc = increase (2 sc into the same stitch)
rnd(s) = round(s)
sc = single crochet stitch
sc3tog = single crochet 3 stitches together - work like a decrease, but over 3 stitches
(crochet together 3 sts with 1 sc)
slst = slip stitch
st(s) = stitch(es)
yo = yarn over (wrap the yarn around the hook)
[…] ...x = repeat instructions in brackets as a sequence as often as written after the closing bracket,
example: [sc 1, dec] 5x

BOB BOBBLE STITCH MADE OUT OF 2 DOUBLE CROCHET STITCHES

Yarn over (yo), insert hook in indicated stitch, yo, pull through stitch, yo, pull through 2 loops on the hook
leaving 2 loops on the hook. (This step is similar to the first part of a regular dc stitch.)

Don’t finish the dc off, but repeat 1 time more:

Yo, insert hook in same st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 lps on hook (1 time).
Yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook to finish off.

BODY
09. Change to white (→ Tutorial C), sc 6, inc, [sc 14, inc] 2x, sc 8 (48)
10.-15. sc 48 (6 rnds)

Place the eyes between round 11 and 12 with a distance of 12 stitches between the eyes.
Stuff the legs and the bottom part firmly. Continue stuffing as you go.

16. Change to yellow, [dec, sc 6] 6x (42)

Stop working in a continuous spiral, but continue working in closed rounds!

From now on every round is finished with a slst into the first stitch, then turn to work back in the
opposite direction, as if you would do when crocheting in rows. Bobble stitches build their bobbles on the back
side. This is why they will always be worked on wrong side rows/rnds.

Remove marker, slst 1 in first st, turn. (→ Photo 15)

LEAVES 22

The leaves are worked in rows. The first stitch to work

into at the beginning of a new row is the stitch at the base
of the turning ch-3 (→ Photo 20). The last stitch of a row
is always worked into the top of the beginning ch-3 from the
previous row (this is the 3rd ch counting from the bottom →
Photo 21). Ch 3 at the beginning of a row count as one stitch.

With light green, make magic loop.

Ch 2, rotate 90° and work along the bottom side of the

triangle. Insert hook into the space next to the body of the
last dc or ch 3 at the end of the row (→ Photo 22):

sc 2 into each end of row until you reach the magic loop in
the middle of the bottom side, sc 1 into the magic loop
(→ Photo 23),
sc 2 into each end of a row until the end of the bottom side,
sc 1 into the first slip stitch of row 06 (→ Photo 24). (22)

Cut the yarn with a long rest and close the row. 25

LARGE LEAF
With light green, follow the instructions as given for the
small leaf until the end of row 05.

Go on with the following two rows:

Cut the yarn with a long rest and close the row.

ASSEMBLING LEAVES AND BODY

Use the yarn tails to sew the bottom of the leaves onto
the body – right above the last white row of the body. Both
leaves meet slightly off center on Corby’s forehead. Refer to
photos 26-28 and page 11 to get the right position.
