CHAPTER I

The Problem and It’s Background

Introduction

Social Media is an internet-based platform that facilitates the sharing of ideas, thoughts,

and information through the building of virtual networks and communities. A technology that

controls social interaction between small or large groups of people through some type of social

media platform that is now rapidly growing and becoming an inevitable part of the life of

everyone because of its upsurge and the modernization of the generation the uses of this is also

being normalized.

All ages use different social media platforms for different reasons, some are for

entertainment, news, learning, etc., but most of the users of these are students particularly teens.

Social media possesses a big role in society when it comes to communication, it allows one to

communicate no matter how far their distance may be.

Social media has plenty of purposes, not only as a form of communication,

entertainment, etc., it is also a platform for others to express their emotions and feelings,

sometimes social media became their friend where they can cry and rant all they want. And

because it has many purposes, social media has also lots of effects especially on the students who

are primary users of it.

This study aims to see whether students’ use of social media influences their political

perspectives. This research increases empirical research on the relation between social media use

and political knowledge among the registered voters of Grade 12 HUMSS. We propose to

investigate the effect of social media use on political knowledge and possibilities of the

mediation of political talk.

Background of the Study

Social Media is the interactive technology that people use to communicate with one another,

share, and search with the help of the internet. Nowadays the most used social media platforms

are Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Twitter, YouTube, and Tiktok that are used by people

regardless of their age. Social media is truly a useful platform to convey messages all over the

world. Instead of sending actual mails, with the help of social media is it easier for us to

communicate. Not only that, but social media can also be useful for gathering information. Now

we are in the digital world, where almost everything can be done in just one click.

Social Media is useful and convenient for everyone right now. In this modern world,

children that are as young as 5 years old already have access to and knowledge on how to use

social media platforms. At an early age, a child can gain social media literacy that can be helpful

once they go to school. It can also help them to research certain things that they want to know. It

will be easier to be updated with the news and to have social awareness. Social media be

expressed by (a) the infrastructure and tools for creating and distributing content with individual

value, but that represents shared values; (b) personal messages, news, and ideas become cultural

items when they are converted to digital form; (c) the individuals, businesses, and industries that

create and consume both tools and content (Howard & Parks, 2012). This shows that social

media means exchanging content containing individual values that will contribute to cultural

products, whereas individuals or organizations that enable new knowledge and values. Users can

develop and engage in different communities through sharing, communicating, interacting,

collaborating, publishing, and managing (Mao, 2014). Social media enables sharing content, and

it has impressive features that allow users to link together through news feeds. In this study,

internet-based one-to-one communication (e.g., instant messaging, email), the content generated

by media organizations (e.g., online news sites), and simulated or fictitious social media sites are

not considered social media (Stoycheff et al., 2017). Besides, the use of social media is focused

on politics and the latest news. Aldahdouh et al. (2020) found that Higher Education Institution

staff mostly use Facebook for work and personal purposes. Also, general innovativeness

contributes to the adoption of technology social networking sites.

Through this research, we aim to know how the social media influences the political

perspectives of registered voters Grade 12 HUMSS Learners in SBIS. Through research, and

conducting surveys, and citing different research that is related to our problem. The students

need to have social media awareness, especially that we are now more engaged in different social

media platforms today. From studying, communicating, information, and also for entertainment.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

In order to established a comprehensive background for this study, a survey of related

literature and studies has been conducted and have drawn out some concepts, ideas and data a

basis in formulating approaches, formats, instruments and necessary information in the conduct

of the study.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), define social media as group of internet-based applications

that build on the ideological and technological foundations of Web 2.0 and allow the creation

and exchange of user-generated content. Social media is also define by Dearborn (2014) as

communication channel which is very popular, extremely fast and broad, has proven to be highly

effective, as well as trusted by billions of people, to share and discover content concerning

individuals, brands, information, entertainment and knowhow.

In addition, social media provides students a new mechanism for a familiar exercise. It

provides students a direct medium by which to publicly evaluate and comment on their campus

environments, institutional policies, classes, professors, and administrations and fellow students

in real-time. Social media zips through our campuses nearly unseen, dragging behind it the heavy

Saint BeNIlde
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (CALAMBA) INc.
S.Y. 2021 – 2022

HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES STRAND

weight of social injustices and complicated jurisprudence accumulated from decades of student

speech (Halil Gurcan, 2015).

Adopting the Orientation–Stimuli–Reasoning–Orientation–Response (O–S–R–O–R)

model of political communication effects, this study examines the mediating roles of

online/offline political discussion and political trust on the relationship between social media

information seeking and online/offline political participation. Findings through structural

equation modeling showed that the relationship between information seeking and online

participation was mediated by online discussion for both samples. Moreover, the relationship

between information seeking and offline participation was mediated by offline discussion, and

offline discussion mediated the relationship between information seeking and online

participation. (Xueqing Li & Michael Chan, 2016)

Moreover, social media activism has become very relevant for many student activist

groups. How can political use of social media be motivated? The concept of Social Media

Political Efficacy was proposed to resolve inconsistencies in prior theories of social media

activism. The relationship between social media political efficacy and social media activism was

stronger than that between the concept of political efficacy employed in prior research and social

media activism. Theory and social media activism implications are discussed. (Alcides

Velasquez & Robert LaRose, 2015)

According to Robertsona et al. (2016), social media that combines news and personal

content has a detrimental effect on students’ knowledge. This leaves it up to news consumers to

11 | P a g e
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
Saint BeNIlde
INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (CALAMBA) INc.
S.Y. 2021 – 2022

HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES STRAND

figure out what is related to and applied emotional states for affective content to more detached,

related, or unrelated information. The ability to analyze facts is key in preventing being duped by

false news (Cooke, 2017). The most common way for students to learn this skill in universities is

to have information literacy training (Leeder, 2019). Subsequent research can consider student

literacy skills to be a factor that affects social media use and the acquisition of political

knowledge.

This follow-up analysis shows that Facebook is still over-privileged when examining the

broader umbrella of social media brands; the social networking hegemon constitutes over half of

all scholarship across an array of social media, including SNS, media sharing sites,

(micro)blogging platforms, virtual communities, and others. (Elizabeth Stoycheff, et al., 2017)

Therefore, political talk can be seen as an elaboration of the media (Jung et al., 2011) in

the process of information sharing in a conversation aimed at integrating information relevant to

long-term memory and the knowledge-building process (Hirst & Echterhoff, 2012). Political

discussions are usually centered on facts obtained from the media (Scheufele et al., 2004).

According to Scheufele and Nisbet (2002), the effect of political news is more reliable in the

presence of discussion.

CHAPTER III

Research Methodology

The primary components of this chapter will include descriptions of the research design,

research locale, respondents of the study, research instrument, data gathering procedure, and

statistical treatment that will be used in the study.

Research Design

A research design is defined by Saunders, Lewis and Thornhill (2011) as the general plan

of how a researcher will go about answering the research questions that he/she has set.

Descriptive research is concerned with conditions or relationships that exist; practices that

prevail; beliefs, points of views, or attitudes that are held; processes that are going on; effects

that are being felt; or trends that are developing. At times, descriptive research is concerned with

how what is or what exists is related to some preceding event that has influenced or affected a

present condition or event.

Descriptive research describes and interprets what is. It is concerned with conditions or

relationships that exist; practices that prevail, beliefs, points of view, or attitudes that are held,

processes that are being felt, or trends that are developing.

The process of descriptive research goes beyond gathering of data and tabulation of the

same. It includes the interpretation of the meaning or the significance of what is described. The

description includes measurement, classification, interpretation and evaluation. The whole

process is focused on the discovery of meaning from data gathered.

This design was chosen because the results gave definite conclusions and it described the

characteristics of the respondents in relation to a particular research objectives.

In this research, the researchers made a survey instrument that includes the demographic

profile of the respondents, the influence of the social media to the political perspective of the

respondents.

Market Research Society (2011) stated that questionnaire offer an objective means of

collecting information about people’s knowledge, beliefs, attitude, and behavior. Randomized

trials are subject to strict reporting criteria, but there is no comparable framework for

questionnaire research.

Ethical Consideration

Prior to disclosing the identity of Saint Benilde International School in the title of this

study, the researcher sought permission from the School Director and Vice-President for

Administration of the school. The respondent's consent was sought, and the researcher explained

the situation to them. They will understand the significance of the research if you explain it to

political perspective?

This question is explained by the respondents and gave a mix results, some are saying

positive while other are saying negative explanations and here are some of the answers with the

same thought with other answer:

“The Internet may also change the way in which political groups and politicians conduct

election campaigns, keep in touch with constituents, and forge alliances with other groups or

individuals. The Internet may also enable small groups with limited resources to participate in

the political process.” – HUMSS 12 – C

“The impact of political advertisements in social media is a very big help for the voters to know

the candidates even more. It makes them easy to recognize.” – HUMSS 12 – A

“It definitely influence a lot of people including me in the past where I only saw a source on

social media about politics but when I got deeper into it I began to read books which fact checks

a lot of stories that is twisted on social media which will became a plague through people

believing this fake stories and news.” – HUMSS 12 – B

“The political advertisements in social media are very impactful in teenagers. They sometimes

believed in what they see on social media even it’s fake news. Especially now that the

my certainty in my political view, while others do not even bother or affect me because I

already know who my candidates are and the facts about them and the other candidates. My

political views will not be swayed only due to their advertisements.” HUMSS 12 – E

“Political advertisement in social media has a huge impact for me because honestly, I have this

presidential candidate that I used to support and then as time goes on my political views

changed because of what I saw on various social media, and I realized that the ones I used to

support, I shouldn't support because of many reasons, so because of what I read and see on

social media, my mind widens as to, who I really should vote for upcoming election.” HUMSS

1. The researchers figured out that the things students engage with and what surrounds

them influence a their political perspective. The factors that influence their capability to

analyze their own perspective are helpful and making them to have awareness especially

as young voters. These factors are important to build their own thoughts and to achieve

certain things that can help them to choose on what and who will they be supporting.

These several factors only prove that as the young voters, listening and doing their own

research in the internet is a very important tool as a guide to make their own political

perspective. Since this study have proved that an individual's political perspective

influence by different factors, they should use those factors to properly choose the correct

leaders that will lead our country. They must use it as a platform of engaging themselves

in a responsible and committed citizen of our country.

2. In terms of Political perspective, social media provides a major role to the students

and in this research, the results have shown that it helps them in different ways, it can be

concluded that social media has both negative and positive effect on the political

perspective of a grade 12 HUMSS student in SBIS. Social media is a platform where

everyone can give their opinion regarding any matter that they can relate with. Different

social media platforms can be positive in terms of seeking information, getting

knowledge and also distributing and discussing certain ideas. While on the other hand,

the negativity from any form of social media that they can get is not all information that

are in the platforms cannot be a fact. Social media are prone to have false informations

from its users. Those benefits of social media in the political perspective of the students

in SBIS will help them to properly choose the correct leaders this coming election, so

they should always be careful on what they see on the internet in order for them to

maintain the good benefits of social media in their political perspective

3. There are different ways on how the political advertisement on social media give

impact on the political perspective of the students in SBIS, the students have stated their

different opinions on how advertisement in social media gave an impact to their political

perspective. it may be concluded that it's impact is highly seen on students because they

engage in social media more often than any other ages. Political advertisements are quite

effective to some students to know the candidates more about their platform and plans for

the country. On the other hand, some students see that political advertisements are not

enough to know the candidates well. Therefore, they do their own research to know more

of the candidates background and accomplishments form reliable resources. They

realized how important to know if the source of information they have seen are legit and

the benefits of fact checking. They have seen articles and news in the social media that

helped them to know the truth and made them choose who will get their support and vote

for the upcoming election. Overall, we cannot deny the fact that social media have

improving the use of social media for political awareness of the grade 12 Humanities and social

sciences students. This chapter contains the researchers' recommendations in response to the

issues raised in Chapter 1's significance of the study section.

 Based on the study result, politics are a staple topic at home, which

concludes the researchers recommend that the institution should at least

guide the parents towards the rampant spreading of fake news by conducting

an anti-fake news webinar teaching parents to choose sources wisely,

spotting fake news, and reading beyond the headlines.

 The researchers highly recommend that future researchers seek further

toward improving the use of social media as a tool for political awareness of

the youths.
