Macbeth

1. What are we told about Macbeth before we even meet him?

We are told he is a brave and a loyal soldier

2. What "prophecy" do the witches tell Macbeth?

The witches told Macbeth that he will become the thane of cawdor meaning he
will become king.

3. What do they tell Banquo about his future?

That his descendants will be the king instead of him.

4. What is Banquo's reaction to the witches' predictions?

He asks the witches questions to figure out the truth and is trying to make sure
that the witches can be trusted.

5. What is Macbeth's reaction to the witches' prediction?

He is curious about it because their prediction of macbeth becoming thane of


cawdor came true.

6. What promotion does Duncan give Macbeth? Why Macbeth? What happened to the
person previously in this position?

He gives him the promotion of becoming thane of cawdor because the previous
thane of cawdor was executed. Macbeth is rewarded.

7. Duncan names his son, Malcolm, next in line to be king. What is Macbeth's reaction
(quote the lines)? he is disappointed, he says, “The Prince of Cumberland! That is
a step on which I must fall down, or else o'erleap, for in my way it lies."
8. What does Lady Macbeth want her husband (Macbeth) to do? She is worried he
won't be able to do it, why?

She wants her husband to murder King Duncan so she and her husband can gain
power. She thinks he is too compassionate and won’t be able to complete her
request.

9. Why is Macbeth reluctant to do as his wife wishes?

Macbeth wants to become king but he knows that killing the king is wrong.

10. How does Lady Macbeth convince Macbeth? What is the "plan"?

She questions Macbeth's manhood. The plan is for them to murder Duncan in his
sleep and blame the guards for killing him.

11. Explain how these two ideas connect: "foul is fair, and fair is foul" & "There's no art
to find the mind's construction on the face." they're both saying that even when
something seems like its good it can actually be bad and if something is bad it
can also be good
