APPLICATIONS

• PhD. NGUYỄN QUỐC LÂN (January, 2022)

CONTENTS OF SESSION 2 (WEEK 2)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. SEPARABLE EQUATION. APPLICATION: COOLING.

2. LINEAR EQUATION. APPLICATION: RL CIRCUIT.
SEPARABLE EQUATION
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

y’ = f(x, y) = F(x)G(y) or f1(x)g1(y)dx + f2(x)g2(y)dy = 0: Separable

Solve: a / y / = xy + x + y + 1 b/ x 2 ( y + 1) dx + y 2 ( x − 2 ) dy = 0
APPLICATION: COOLING PROBLEM
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A hot rock with temperature of 100C is placed in water of 20C. 20

minutes later, the rock temperature is 60C. When will the rock
temperature be 30C?
1st ORDER LINEAR
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1st order linear DE (in standard form): y’ + a(x)y = b(x)

( ) ( )  a( x )dx
1/ Integration Factor:  a x dx (No C)   x = e

1 
2 / Final solution:y =  b ( x )  ( x ) dx + C 
 ( x)  

Example 2 (page 47): Solve (x2 + 1)y / + 3xy = 6 x

“INVERSE” LINEAR OR INTERCHANGE x AND Y.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some DE is nonlinear in term of y = y(x) but linear for x = x(y)!

Example: Solve: 2 ydx + y 2 − 2 x dy = 0 ( )

APPLICATION: RL CIRCUIT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------

An RL electric circuit consisting of a resistor R = 12, an inductor

L = 4H and a power source E = 8sin3t V. Let I(t) (amperes) be the
current flowing the circuit, knowing I(1) = 0.5A, find I(t).
INITIAL LINEAR DE PROBLEM: EVALUATE y(b)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 y / + a ( x ) y = b ( x ) 1  
x
  y ( x1 ) = ? Tip: y ( x ) =  b ( s )  ( s ) ds + C 
 y ( x0 ) = y0  ( x) x 
0 
Example: Given y / − 2 xy = 1, y ( 0 ) = 2, evaluate approximately y (1)
APPLICATION: RL CIRCUIT
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------

An RL electric circuit consisting of a resistor R = 12, an inductor

L = 4H and a power source E = 12sin5t V. Let I(t) (amperes) be the
current flowing the circuit, knowing I(1) = 0.5A, approximate I(2).
