What is Energy?
● Energy is the ability to [ do work or create change ].
● We get energy from many different sources, which can be either
[renewable ] or [nonrenewable ]
● What does it mean if an energy source is non-renewable?
[It means that once the source of that energy is gone, you can no
longer use or find anymore of that energy. ]
● What does it mean if an energy source is renewable?
[This means the energy can be replenished. ]

Non-Renewable Energy Sources - Fossil Fuels

Most of the energy sources we use today are what we call fossil fuels.
[Fossil fuels] are concentrated energy sources, storing all the [energy
from ancient organisms ] that formed them. We [ burn ] these fuels to
[release].

Think About It…

When fossil fuels are burned to get energy, what else happens? (type the
whole answer not just the letter)
[Carbon Dioxide and other gases are released into the atmosphere.
]
Why is this bad?
[ More carbon dioxide in the atmosphere contribute to climate
change and global warming ]

Types of Fossil Fuels

Oil
○ Can be used as [ ] for cars, trucks, and other vehicles.
○ Can be used to [ ] or generate electricity.
○ Can be used to [ ] and other products.
○ The US consumes [ ] of the world’s entire oil production.
● Pros:
○ [ ]
○ easy to store and [ ]
○ packs a lot of [ ] in a small volume
● Cons:
○ drilling for oil [ ] and people who live in the area
○ oil spills can [ ] wildlife, and [ ] water
○ burning oil releases [ ] into the atmosphere

Natural Gas
○ Natural gas [burn easily ] and has no odor.
○ After it is pumped from the ground, it is mixed with a chemical
to give it a strong smell so that people know if there is a leak.
○ The gas is sent through underground pipes to homes, schools,
or businesses to [cook food or provide heat ].
○ It is also sent to power plants to [ generate electricity ].
○ [20% ] of all energy used in the US comes from natural gas.
● Pros:
○ Burns cleaner than other fossil fuels.
○ Has a wide [ variety ] of uses.
○ [ Inexpensive ]
● Cons:
○ Production of natural gas has a [negative impact ] on wildlife
and is [ destructive ] to the environment.
○ There is not enough natural gas on the planet to last in the
future.
○ Natural gas is highly [ explosive ].

Coal
○ Coal is removed from the earth in two ways: [surface mining and
underground mining ].
○ The US has the world’s largest share of known coal deposits.
○ Coal generates more than [ 50% ] of the electricity usage in the
US.
● Pros:
○ [Inexpensive ]
○ Easy to [ transport ]
○ [ Abundant ]
● Cons:

○ Releases large amounts of [CO2

○ ]
○ Contributes to [acid rain ]
○ Difficult and [ dangerous to mine ]
○ Mining is [ destructive ] to the environment
