Module 4: Planning and

curriculum alignment for

effective teaching and learning
in 7-10 classes
The Backward Mapping Process
It is important to know how and what students will be assessed on before
planning a lesson/lesson sequence. You must teach everything that will be
assessed.
This is the Backward Planning process and you begin by asking:

Identify desired results - What should learners know, understand, and be

able to do? (Select appropriate curriculum content)

Determine acceptable evidence - How will we know if students have

achieved the desired results and met the standards? What will you accept
as evidence of learner understanding and proficiency?

Plan learning experiences and instruction - What activities will equip

learners with the needed knowledge and skills? What strategies will you
use?

Module 4: Planning and curriculum alignment for effective teaching and learning in 7-10 classes 1
Planning starts with the achievement standard, then this will create a goal for a
particular learning sequence. This approach has 3 steps:

1. What is the intention or objective of the learning?

2. What will be acceptable evidence of student learning?

3. What teaching and learning strategies and resources will enable students to
achieve the learning goal?

Evidence of Learning
Completing this process as a first step in the planning process will help to
establish learning intentions and success criteria that reflect learning
outcomes.

The criteria should be based on the outcomes to assess and monitor student
learning. The evidence you collect must closely reflect the outcomes for the
unit of work to determine the level of achievement of outcomes and to plan the
next steps in the learning process.

Ask yourself:

What do I want my students to be able to know and do?

How will I know they understand the content and skills?

Feedback
Teachers should consider:

The most effective form of feedback for students based on the criteria
provided.

How feedback contributes to and improves future learning.

Feedback may take a variety of forms, including digital and other modes. It may
be formal or informal, and include:

Oral feedback from the teacher, student and their peers and/or through
group work activities, forums and conferences.

Self-assessment by students based on the criteria.

Written feedback based on the criteria for assessing learning.

Provision of exemplar responses to assist students in further analysing their

work.

7 Principles of the Backward by Deign Model

The sections above have described what the Backward by Design model is all
about, but how to teachers actually do it?

are usually:

Planning and Curriculum Alignment
Curriculum alignment and planning are important because they:
Ensure Effective Instruction

Planning helps teachers prepare and organise their lessons to ensure effective
instruction that meets the needs of all students. It helps them anticipate student
questions, identify potential misconceptions, and plan instructional strategies to
address them. Preservice teachers who learn effective planning techniques are
better equipped to provide high-quality instruction to their students.

Enhance Learning Outcomes

When instruction is aligned with curriculum standards and learning objectives,

it is more likely to lead to positive learning outcomes. Preservice teachers who
understand how to align their instruction with curriculum standards and

objectives can create lessons that promote deeper learning, critical thinking,
and problem-solving skills.

Meets the Needs of Diverse Learners

Planning and curriculum alignment are essential for meeting the needs of
diverse learners. When teachers plan their instruction, they can differentiate
their instruction to accommodate the unique learning needs of their students.
Preservice teachers who learn how to align their instruction with the diverse
needs of their future students can create inclusive classrooms where all
students can thrive.
Facilitates Assessment

Planning and curriculum alignment are critical for facilitating assessment. When
teachers plan their instruction, they can identify appropriate assessment
strategies and align them with learning objectives. Preservice teachers who
understand how to align their assessments with curriculum standards can use
assessment results to adjust their instruction and improve student learning
outcomes.

Aids Professional Growth

Planning and curriculum alignment are essential for professional growth.

Preservice teachers who learn how to plan and align their instruction can apply
these skills throughout their teaching careers. By continuously refining their
planning and alignment skills, teachers can improve their instructional practices
and promote positive learning outcomes for their students.
