Stainless steel is a group of alloys that contain a minimum of 10.5% chromium. Because stainless steel contains at least 10.5% chromium,
the oxidation of the iron is changed to produce a complex oxide that resists further oxidation and forms a passive layer on the surface.
The passive layer is only a few microns in thickness and will reform if it is removed by scratching or machining. If stainless steel is
properly selected and maintained, it should not suffer any corrosion. For highly corrosive areas, 316 grade or clear coat over 304L may be
recommended. Hager’s standard grade stainless steel is 304L.
The three key types of corrosion that normally effect door hardware products are:
1. Atmospheric Corrosion
Atmospheric corrosion occurs when stainless steel is exposed to airborne liquids, solids or gases. Some sources of
atmospheric corrosion are sea spray, rain in coastal zones, salt (possibly from de-icing), and dirt. This form of corrosion is
typically worse outdoors, especially near marine environments.
2. Chemical Corrosion
Chemical corrosion takes place when stainless steel comes in direct contact with a material that has a high chloride
concentration or a strong corrosive solution. Some factors which affect the severity of chemical corrosion include:
chemical/chloride concentration level, duration of contact, frequency of washing, and the operating environment.
3. Contact Corrosion
A small piece of carbon steel, scale, copper, or foreign material lodged in stainless steel may be sufficient to destroy
passivity at the point of contact and cause pitting. Carbon steel brushes and steel wool should never be used to
clean stainless steel.
In many cases, standard household cleaners can be used to clean and maintain stainless steel hardware items. Soap, ammonia, and
detergent and water are used to clean normal dirt. Cleaning should always be followed by rinsing with clean water. When water contains
mineral solids, which leave water spots, it is advisable to wipe the surface completely with dry towels.
In selecting cleaning practices, consider the possibility of scratching and the potential for post cleaning corosion caused by incompletely
removed cleaners. Select only cleaners that are not abrasive, not acidic, and low in chloride. Many antibacterial cleaners used to clean and
sanitize door hardware contain high levels of chlorides, which will cause corrosion if not properly removed from the surface by rinsing.
Routine cleaning is essential, especially in environments that have elevated levels of atmospheric corrosion. Proper care for your stainless
steel door hardware will result in many years of durable use.

The mortice locks have a maximum 235 mm high x 24 mm wide forend; the latch/deadbolt,
case, forend and strikeplates are all of steel, with a latchbolt projection of 12.5 mm. All
models approved in 55mm backset, with 20 mm and 24 mm width forend options and either
square or radiused forend and strikeplate.
2. This certification is provided to the client for their own purposes and we cannot opine on
whether it will be accepted by Building Control authorities or any other third parties for any
purpose.
3. This approval relates to their use with the following door assemblies:-
5. This approval relates to the use of the above locks/latches in contributing to the fire
resistance performance of timber based doorsets and predominantly steel-based doorsets,
as defined in BS EN 1634-1 or BS 476: Part 22: 1987. Issued: 6th August 2021

7. The mortice locks and/or latches should only be used with door assemblies of proven fire
resistance (as defined in BS EN 1634-1 or BS 476: Part 22: 1987) with similar size locks
and strikeplates. The critical aspects of the doorset construction are considered to be the
material of the door frame, the leaf to frame clearance gaps and the lipping material.
Attention should be paid to these details and these should not be amended from that
previously fire tested. The following minimum specification shall be followed:
Timber-based assemblies:
i) Door frame density - 450 kg/m³ (30 minutes), 640 kg/m3 (60 minutes)
ii) Door leaves shall have a minimum thickness of 44 mm for 30 minute applications
and 54 mm for 60 minute applications.
iii) Lipping density - 640 kg/m3.
8. When fitted to insulated timber or mineral composite door assemblies, The required
protection will be as follows:
i) The required protection for 30 minute ITT applications will be 2 mm thick Interdens
mono ammonium phosphate intumescent sheet material around the lock case and
behind the forend and strike plate.
ii) The required protection for 60 minute ITT applications will be 2 mm thick Firestop
graphite-based intumescent sheet material around the lock case and behind the
forend and strike plate. Additionally the perimeter intumescent within the
frame/door edge shall by-pass the strike plate or forend by a minimum of 8 mm
wide on each side (with the exception of the latchbolt lead where present).
9. The mortice locks and/or latches and their associated strikeplates and keeps may only be
fitted in the manner described in this certificate and subject to any limitations on the
inclusion of locks/latches specified for the door leaf. This approval is applicable only to the
specified locks used with door assemblies of proven fire resistance (as defined in BS EN
1634-1 or BS 476: Part 22: 1987) and when using appropriate intumescent protection.
10. The mortice locks and/or latches should only be used with doorsets which have been
previously shown to be capable of providing the required fire resistance performance when
tested in accordance with EN 1634-1 or BS 476: Part 22: 1987 in the proposed
configuration i.e. single-leaf or double-leaf.
11. The locks/latches should not be fitted higher than 1100 mm from the spindle to the finished
floor level of the surrounding floors.
12. Lock assemblies not incorporating a latching mechanism shall only be fitted to proven
unlatched door assemblies.
13. Cylinders shall only be fitted to doors which have previously been shown capable of
accommodating the installation of cylinder locks without detriment to the doorset’s
performance.
14. The mortice locks may incorporate Euro profile cylinders as follows:
i) Single cylinder
ii) Double cylinder
iii) Cylinder and thumbturn
iv) Brass or steel cylinders for ITT30 and 60 doorsets
v) Brass or Steel cylinders only for MM/IMM 240 doorsets
Note: The hole in the door face shall follow the shape of the cylinders and be as tight as
possible; furthermore the single cylinders door preparation will penetrate through only half
the thickness of the door leaf)
15. Recessing for locks shall result in a tight fit, allowing for any intumescent protection
where required. Mortices for the latchbolt and deadbolt behind the strikeplate shall be as
small as possible.
16. The spindle hole through the door shall be a maximum of 15 mm diameter unless the
doorset has test evidence that proves spindle holes of a greater size than this.
18. The approval relates to on-going production. Product and/or its immediate packaging is
identified with the manufacturer’s name, the product name or number, the CERTIFIRE
name or name and mark, together with the CERTIFIRE certificate number and application
where appropriate.
19. The following table shows the acceptable doorset types and fire resistance periods:
Code ITT - 20 minute to 120 minute doorsets containing intumescent seals and consisting
of timber faced and edged leaves with timber, cellulosic or mineral cores, hung in timber-
based frames.
Code ITM - 20 minute to 120 minute doorsets containing intumescent seals and consisting
of timber faced and edged leaves with timber, cellulosic or mineral cores, hung in steel
frames.
Code ITC - 20 minute to 120 minute doorsets containing intumescent seals and consisting
