A sentence is a group of words that are arranged in a way to convey

complete sense.

There are five types of sentences.

1) Declarative sentence: A declarative sentence is also called an


assertive sentence or statement.

Example:
Vivaan is playing football.

They have been waiting for two hours.

Vihana won the match.

The boys are not going to the cinema.

A declarative sentence is of two types:

a) Affirmative: When it is a simple statement.

Vivaan plays football.

b) Negative: When not, no, did not, does not etc. are used in a sentence.

Vivaan doesn’t play football.

Example:
Kridday invited you. (Affirmative)

Kridday did not invite you. (Negative)

2) Interrogative Sentence: These sentences ask a question. An


interrogative sentence ends with a question mark (?)

Example:

Is Krish going to Kolkata?

Did Vivansh play chess?

Have you done your work?


Why are you boys not studying properly?

An interrogative sentence is of two types:

a) Affirmative: When it is a simple question.

Is Inayat going to school? (Affirmative)

b) Negative: When not, no, did not, does not etc. are used in a question.

Is Inayat not going to school? (Negative)

3) Imperative sentence: These sentence expresses a command, wish,


make a request or suggestion. It ends with a full stop. “You” will always be
the subject of the sentence and it remains an understood ( will not be
stated in the sentence) condition at the beginning.

Example:

(You) Shut the door. (command)

Please give me a glass of water. (request)

Do not run in the sun. (ordered)

Let Avir do it. (wish)

Let us go home. (suggestion)

4) Optative sentence: These sentences express “wish” or “pray”. The


sentence begins with “May” and ends with a Full stop.

Example:

May you live long.

May God bless you.

May you succeed in life.

May you enjoy your surprise.


5) Exclamatory sentence: These sentences express strong emotions or
feelings. An exclamatory sentence with an exclamation mark (!)

Example:

Alas! I have failed!

What an enjoyable match!

How kind are you!

Oh! What a nice view.

Am not ———
