Assignment 3

Due date: 27 November 2024 (The assignments should be submitted in the tutorial class)
Late assignments within 24 hours will have 50% score deduction. Late for more than 24 hours will
have no marks. (Total 50 marks)
1. Write down the IUPAC names for the following compounds.
(a) (b) (c) (d)

2. Calcium metal (Ca) reacts with chlorine gas (Cl2) to give calcium chloride (CaCl2) solid.
(a) Write down a balanced equation for this reaction and indicate the oxidation number for all
species in the reaction.
(b) You were given 10.0 g calcium. Calculate the mass (in grams) of Cl2 required for the
complete reaction.
(c) What is the mass of CaCl2 would you expected for 100% reaction yield?

3. (a) What is the meaning of “resonance structures”?

(b) Draw all the reasonable resonance structures for phenol (as given below). You need to indicate
the electron transfer using suitable arrows.

(phenol)

4. Rusting of iron (Fe) is the formation of iron oxides with oxygen gas (O2) in the presence of
moisture or acid. Common rust often refers to iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3) in solid form.
(a) Write a balanced equation for the formation of Fe2O3 from Fe and O2.
(b) What is the name of the group in periodic table does iron belongs to?
(c) Iron(II) oxide (FeO) also occur in rust. However, iron(II) ion can react with hydrogen peroxide
(H2O2) to form iron(III) ion in acidic aqueous solution.
(i) Write down the half equation for the reaction from Fe2+ to Fe3+.
(ii) Determine whether the reaction in (c)(i) is oxidation or reduction with explanation.
(iii) Complete the following overall redox reaction.
___ Fe2+ (aq) + ___ H2O2 (l) + ___ H+ ___ Fe3+ (aq) + ___ H2O (l)

5. Rutherford’s experiment involved -particle hitting to gold foil surrounded by detecting screen.
Describe the observations and explain how does the results imply for.
