Section A : General Comments
Comments
High temperature working

It is suggested that, for temperatures above 350C, the following guidelines are adopted as
good working practice:

(i) Store unmixed materials in a cool (preferably temperature controlled) environment, avoiding
exposure to direct sunlight.
(ii) Keep equipment cool, arranging shade protection if necessary. It is especially important to
keep cool those surfaces of the equipment which will come into direct contact with the material
itself.
(iii) Try to avoid application during the hottest times of the day, arrange temporary shading as
necessary.
(iv) Make sufficient material, plant and labour available to ensure that application is a continuous
process.

Equipment
It is suggested that the following list of equipment is adopted as a minimum requirement
Protective clothing : Protective overalls
: Good quality gloves, goggles and face mask
Preparation equipment : Proprietary blasting equipment

Mixing equipment : 1 KW slow speed drill, 400 or 500 rpm,

plus Fosroc Sealant Mixing Paddle
Application equipment : Brush
Fosroc G Gun
Joint shaping tool

Application - points of note

Fosroc operates a policy to encourage the use, where possible, of approved or licensed applicators.
This ensures that repairs are completed satisfactorily so that the long term performance of the
materials is assured. For contractors who wish to apply the materials themselves Fosroc is also able
to offer technical assistance and training, either on-site or at its Training Centre in Jeddah.

Section B : Application Method

1.0 Joint Preparation

Refer to the Joint width/depth ratio as per manufacturers instructions in the technical
data sheet.

1.1 The substrate to which Thioflex 600 is bonded must be clean, dry and sound. All arris repairs
should be effected using a Fosroc repair compound.

1.2 Remove all dirt, surface laitance, residual joint former or other contamination from joint faces
by power wire brushing, grinding or grit-blasting. Ensure usage of dry, oil-free compressed air
for blowing all joints. Oil or grease can be removed using Fosroc Joint cleaner.

1.3 All expansion joints must be filled with fillers; tightly packed with no gaps or voids existing at
the base of the sealing slot.

1.4 For construction or contraction joints, a bond breaker or back up tape is recommended, but in
joints where hydrostatic pressure exists, only bond breaking tapes must be used.

2.0 Mixing

2.1 Gun Grade

2.1.1 The two components of Thioflex 600, supplied in correct mixing proportions, must be
thoroughly mixed for at least 2 minutes using the recommended Fosroc sealant
mixing paddle fitted to a slow speed electric drill.

2.1.2 Ensure that the inside of the tin is scraped with a flat bladed tool so that there is no
component on the sides left unmixed.

2.1.3 Mixing should be continued for a further three minutes. The total mixing time is 5
minutes.

2.2 Pouring Grade

2.2.1 The two components of Thioflex 600, supplied in correct mixing proportions, must be
thoroughly mixed for 5 minutes.

2.2.2 Ensure proper mixing of the material right at the bottom of the tin, as it will effect the
curing otherwise.

constructive solutions

3.0 Priming

3.1 Non-Porous Substrate

3.1.1 priming is not necessarily required except joints are to be intermittently or

permanently immersed in water.

3.2 Porous Substrates

3.2.1 The substrate must be primed with Primer 7; a one part, chemically active clear liquid

3.2.2 Apply one thin coat of Primer 7 onto the surface using a clean, dry brush, ensuring
complete coverage.

3.2.3 The mixed Thioflex 600 must be applied when the primer is tack free.

3.2.4 Ensure application of Thioflex 600 within 3 hours @ 20°C, or 90 minutes @ 35°C. Re-
priming is necessary if application is delayed.

4.0 Application

Thioflex 600 must not be used in direct contact with materials containing pitch or bitumen.

4.1 After completion of mixing of the two components, place the single hole follower plate over
the Thioflex and fill directly into a Fosroc G Gun.

4.2 Gun Thioflex 600 firmly into the joint to ensure complete wetting of the bonding surfaces.

4.3 The pouring grade may be poured directly into horizontal joints. For application to horizontal
joints less than 15mm wide, load the Thioflex 600 into a Fosroc “G” Gun.

4.4 Compress and smooth the sealant with a joint shaping tool wetted with a dilute detergent
solution.

4.5 Upon smoothening of the sealant, immediately strip off any masking tape.

5.0 Cleaning

5.1Clean all equipment immediately after use with Fosroc Solvent 102.

PP10 project is one of the biggest power project in the central region of Saudi Arabia. It was  Nitomortar TC200
constructed at a cost SR 11 B. The project was required by SEC to meet the growing power
demand. This EPC grass root project was built on a 5 million m2 site.

A 100,000 m2 tank farm storage area with huge steel tanks were constructed. The client SEC
was looking a specialized product to protect the concrete surfaces from any spillage of oil on
the concrete surfaces. The product should also be flexible enough to withstand the
temperature drop between different times of day.

The client major concern was material delivery as the works were to be completed within a
very short time period.
Nitocote EPU being mixed for
application
THE SOLUTION
Nitocote EPU, Flexible protective coating, based on epoxy polyurethane resins, was selected
to protect the concrete surfaces in the secondary containments tank farm. Fosroc
demonstrated that Nitocote EPU will be the ideal coating solution that will meet the project
requirements both in terms of being flexible and yet rigid enough to allow light traffic
movement in the tank farm area.

Nitocote EPU was proposed and accepted by the consultant after careful evaluation of the
product.

Application of Nitocote EPU

THE BENEFITS
Fosroc provided a very cost effective solution for the concrete surfaces protection against oil
spillage. Fosroc also demonstrated to the client that Fosroc has the ability to manufacture and
deliver the complete quantities within the agreed time frame.

Fosroc’s key on-site technical assistance to the applicator was the greatest benefit extended
to the client duration of the coating works. The coatings works were carried out by through
our approved applicator.

10,000 packs of Nitocote EPU were delivered to the project to complete the coatings works.
Huge quantity of Thioflex was also delivered for the expansion/constructions joints in the tank

DATE
March 2005

THE PROJECT
March 2005 saw the beginning of construction on the £200m redevelopment of Ascot racecourse. The
PRODUCTS
project, undertaken by architect HOK sport and main contractor Laing O’Rourke was one of the most  Nitoseal MS300, MS100
ambitious of its kind in Europe.  Flamex S
 Thioflex 600 PG
The centrepiece of the project is a 45,000 capacity grandstand including an internal naturally lit galleria,  Nitobond SBR
with a new parade ring behind the main stands. With a scheduled re-opening of May 27th 2006, a
 Cemtop
prefabricated modular structure was chosen to increase the speed of construction.
 Conbextra BB
At 350 metres long and 40 metres deep, the new grandstand will hold 45,000 people, including 300 private
boxes. As a result, the terracing and public concourse required a robust sealant to accommodate high
volume foot trafficking.

THE SOLUTION
Fosroc worked closely with the design team to ensure the best system solution was chosen.

As per the specification, the grandstand terracing and parade ring was sealed with Fosroc’s Nitoseal MS300
one part joint sealant. Around 10,000 linear metres of Nitoseal MS300 was applied as part of a double seal.
Joint sizes were 20mm x 20mm. Because of its high modulus and movement capacity, Nitoseal MS300 was
used for all trafficked joints on the concrete terracing to ensure a robust, watertight seal.
In order to meet fire-resistance requirements, joints were then double sealed with Fosroc’s Flamex S one
part fire rated silicone sealant. Flamex S is fire rated up to 4 hours resistance, tested to BS476 Part 22:1987
(ISO 834).
In addition, 5000 linear metres of Thioflex 600 was applied to the trackside concourse to ensure a robust
watertight seal and minimise the possiblity of cracking.
As well as sealants, Fosroc supplied Nitobond SBR for the screed flooring in the main grandstand structure.
The flooring in the toilet facilities was also treated with Fosroc products. Again, Nitobond SBR was used,
with the cured concrete being topped off with Cemtop. Each of the eight 12m x 4m toilet facilities were
given a 10mm thick coating of Cemtop in order to provide a level heavy duty underlay that could withstand
continuous foot traffic.
Cemtop was also used to level the surface of the main concourse where puddling had occurred during
construction.
Away from the main grandstand, Fosroc products were used in another major redevelopment. The Ascot
race track was previously crossed by two roads. This was seen as a major flaw with the old track as horses
were not comfortable running over the artificial turf that was laid across them on race days.
To solve this, two underpasses have been constructed to conceal the roads. Fosroc’s Conbextra BB
cementitious bridge bearing grout was used in the construction of the underpasses supporting the new
track. These were constructed with retaining walls and capped with reinforced concrete decks, over which
an uninterrupted track of turf was laid.
